This guide, which functions not only as a dictionary and thesaurus, also gives
useful examples on how to use each word in a practical manner. It was created
by a graduate college student and a professional writer, to assist writers who
wish to expand their choice of descriptive words which can be used instead of
"said" while writing fiction, poetry, essays, etc.
We have developed this handy reference book, of OVER 1,000 words, in a manner
that will assist them not only in finding synonyms for the word, "said," but
also give them other options for the synonym itself. Each word is defined in
an easy to understand fashion and is followed by several words with that same
meaning. In addition, each word is used in a sample sentence meant to
demonstrate its proper usage.
Here are a couple of examples:
Abjured: renounced under oath; recanted solemnly. Abandoned; disallowed;
disavowed; disclaimed; deserted; gave up; recanted; rejected; renounced;
repudiated. "I know that I told the police I did it, but I didn't kill him,"
abjured Erica tearfully, "I didn't kill him!"
Gasped: drew in one's breath sharply as from shock or surprise. Gulped;
panted; wheezed. "You scared the heck out of me," gasped the startled woman.
Philosophized: set forth or expressed a moralistic, often superficial love and
pursuit of wisdom or knowledge. Idealized; moralized; rationalized; reasoned;
theorized. "The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled,"
philosophized Plutarch.
