Despite what many "new age" movements claim, you cannot simply "become" a
"witch"....and i use this term with disgust.So-called "witches" at one time
were actually individual members of a pagan society, who recieved their
knowledge through oral transmission handed down to generation after
generation, through their bloodline. This is not meant however,to discourage
those who feel attracted to the craft. It is meant simply to establish certain
facts,so that the fellow seeker does not fall by the wayside in their quest for
knowledge,or become involved with charlatans.
1.You either have this royal blood or you don't.If you do,you'll know it.And
the strivings of this blood nature will lead you to the correct sources for
information.Just trust your inner guide to lead you directly to this source. If
you have this blood, you will be driven to the source, for many reasons. One of
which is our perpetual discontent which comes from leading the "outsiders"
lifestyle. It does'nt come naturally to us,and conflicts with our inner
being.........2. Be wary of charlatans:Locate those who have been practicing
the craft for generations. They are closer than you think,,just seek and you
shall find.Try it and see.3.Remember that the craft encompasses a whole lot
more than spellbindings, and wand-waving.It is a way of life, not something that
can be dabbled in......................Fortune be with
you!...............Yukon,Children of Dana.

I actually find a tiny tiny grain of merit in what Yukon said, but that
tiny grain is wrapped up in a hefty pile of...you get the picture.

You don't just wake up one morning and say "I think I'll be a witch
today." It is a yearning that grows from a young age. But it does not
come from any hereditary "witch gene". You are not Born a Witch.
Usually those who have the yearning also have a knack for it, but that
comes from how you grow up at a very early age, not from some trait
passed on from parent to child. To infer that it is hereditary actually
brings to my mind the Eugenics theories out of WW2.

Exactly.
Besides......(in response to the primary post on this subject...) does
that mean that you cannot "be" a witch just because it is not in your
bloodline.....that you must be denied of what you believe because of who
your parents are?
That seems like hypocrisy to me.

blessed be,

Let me just say that Aradi went about teaching the Common folk of Italy the old
ways during the fourteenth century...she taught them whether they had this
"witch blood" or not...she taught everyone regardless of their blood, she
taught them because they had a desire to learn.....You do not have to have
special blood to become a witch....you only have to have faith and dedication
to your chosen path.....I do not believe the whole "natural witch" thing...to
me that borrows a bit to much from the movie "The Craft".....

You are triply blest. How good it is to see that you have not been flayed
alive and your liver eaten by many who profess to be high priests and
priestesses and Old Craft Ladies, and "elders" of witchcraft who go to
church. How good it is to hear your voice. "royal Blood" was laying it on a

This is just me wondering here, but how exactly is it determined if one has
the blood? If someone has "the blood" and is drawn to witchcraft, that's
one thing. But how about those without the blood who are drawn to
witchcraft? Is there some kind of a blood test that you can do to see if
they're "of the blood" or not? And who decides about these things? I'm
imagining some kind of board of directors, since the phrase is "we have
none of you", there's got to be more than one person running this whole
traditional shebang. I'd imagine that after generations of people being
forcibly converted to Christianity, there are (assuming your statements are
accurate) an awful lot of people "of the blood" who don't realize it - they
haven't got a family tradition. Or rather, they have, but it ended about
1500 years ago.

I know they're rather mundane questions for such a lofty concept, but I
tend to get bogged down in details.

I have always been drawn to the craft of witches and magick....I guess that
means I have the witch blood...I only referred to the movie because it seems
that ever since it came out there have been people who learn everything they
know about witchcraft from that movie....and the movie has something about
"Natural Witches" in it......which I do not buy into.

I also practice Stregheria which Aradia taught and let me remind you again
that Aradia taught everyone.....she did not give them all blood tests for witch
blood first...she taught them the old religion so that they could rise together
against the hypocrisy of the christian church which brutally slaughtered
thousands of witches in old Italy......

I, as a follower of Diana's Daughter Aradia am blessed with the thirteen gifts
of Aradia which she told her followers would be theirs if they gave honor and
worship to the old ways and to her mother Diana the queen of all witches.
Aradia taught that these gifts could be anyone's if they adhered to the ways of
the old religion or La Vecchia Religione. She did not care who they were or
what family they had been born into.
There is no natural talent for following a certain religous
path...unless you are a Fundemenalist christian.....they have the natural
talent for being assholes.....and apparently so do you.......

Also I would like to add that most of us Witches feel as though this path chose
us and we did not just wake up one morning and decide to be witches......The
goddess chose us to follow her ways....Most of us feel as though we have been
down this path of magick and witchcraft before in past incarnations........a
sense of "coming home" is how most witches describe the experience....I guess
everyone who had this experience must have "Witch Blood" eh?

May Aradia help you get over your "Holier than thou" crusade. You are making
me sick...you sound to much like the christians who believe they are better
then everyone else as do you apparently......

Tanarra

P.S. I was studying magick and wicca before I ever saw that movie. But you and
your natural witch ideas made me think that maybe you haven't been.....

Those of the grail (blood) are recognized by practitioners both blooded and
schooled . The craft must be followed closely if the schooled practitioner
is to be effective . The blooded need'nt be overly concerned with the
setting up of flows , ritual is an aid to the schooled practitioner in that
a focus is drawn , this focus is natural to the blooded practitioner whether
part of a circle or solitary in practice . The undisciplined carriers of the
grail exist as freaks in the world , regarded as psychics , geniuses , and
savants . Know thyself .

~"witch Blood" ?? what is it and how do you get it? Blood is blood!
~Unless you are descended from Faerie. I come from a long line of witches

My question exactly, Bkwyrm. Can I go to my local Witch Doctor and have
my blood drawn to see if I'm of the obviously Different Race known as
Witches. And is this a recessive or dominant gene? What happens if you
are adopted and have been cut off from your "blood"? Do I have to
inform my mundane medical specialists that I am a Witch and not a Pole
as previously believed, if my test comes out positive? Do I have to
wait 6 to 8 weeks for results?

Please, these questions are burning at me. If I am only half Witch,
does that mean I'm a Wit? I can only do half the spell? I can only hug
half a tree? Only the front of my cat is my familiar, her ass is just
cat? Can I, then, cut it off and mount it, making it a cat ass trophy?

~This is just me wondering here, but how exactly is it determined if one has
~the blood?

Well, to give a personal example: my father's side of the family has a long
line of "wierd women". This meant that wierd things happened around them (ie
poltergeist activity at puberty, premonitions, unlikely coincidental phenomena,
etc), and almost all of the men (the generational heads of household anyway)
were blacksmiths. That wasn't so uncommon a hundred years ago, but today it's
almost unheard of.

This alone wouldn't necessarily indicate witch blood, but when I was very young
I had a strange attraction to candles and incense before I knew they were used
for magic. I didn't even know there *was* such a thing as magic then. My dad
told me if they'd light a candle, I'd sit and stare at it for a half hour or
more (a long long time for a four year old, not much now). That alone wouldn't
necessarily indicate witch blood either. Taken in conjunction with the actual
histories of witches in the family, however, these things have to point to
something.

~But how about those without the blood who are drawn to
witchcraft?

What about them? They can learn witchcraft just the same as anyone else. I
suppose the difference would be like two weightlifters, one from stout healthy
German stock, the other from skinny, unhealthy bookworms. Both of them can lift
weights, but one will have an easier time of it. Their final achievements still
depend upon the amount of effort they put into it.

~And who decides about these things?

It was decided centuries ago, by your ancestors.

~I'd imagine that after generations of people being
~forcibly converted to Christianity, there are (assuming your statements are
~accurate) an awful lot of people "of the blood" who don't realize it -

Even more interesting, my aunt (who was the first who made suspect the blood in
the family) converted and is now a Born Again Christian. She still has the
Juice though, and when she gets on about Jesus, it's really something to see.

(Beginning with a large, crooked toothed, grin) Paraphrasing an old Math
problem as a cite, and I'm sure everyone will recognize the base.
There had to be at least one "Witch" extant in the world of our past for
"Witch blood" to be in existence at all. If this Witch was a mutant that
lived at least 30,000 years ago, that "Witch blood" flows through the
veins of 99.9999% of the population of our contemporary world. If there
happened to be "Witch blood" amongst those who rose on their hind legs
and began the process of creative thought in Olduvai Gorge, the
percentage is so near 100% as to be beyond my ability to write the
number of nines to the right of the decimal point.

There goes your liver pal, wait, much more is to come from this, if my
"ancient witch powers" serve me aright......the caveats and disclaimers must
be at least as long as the original article itself if you are to survive the
opinions of those "called".

Don't get your knickers in a ball, I don't think that they meant to
disenfranchise you, not your personally, but those who are called. Not all
the witch families in the western world can produce enough witches to
populate a small hamlet. Where then are our numbers to come from? Since no
one promotes unlimited production of children..like some people we could
name.....the called ones are as valuable as precious children at our knees.

This post begins a subject which does divide many witches. Yukon, myself, and
others have followed a family path that may-or may not- mesh in some points;
many of those "called" also follow diverse paths, some fully described in
literature available in bookstores. Where is all of this going to come
together to the point where, not to establish an orthidoxy, but to where all
can be included? An effort has to be made for this to occur.

Hee hee, how right you are. That remark usually is used when taking someone
into the family, it can mean many things. An attitude, or much less
frequently, someone from a similar family or background. You don't want to
bring just anyone into the family because you will never get them out. And
you will be stuck with the ghosts of their ancestors.

I sleep rather well, thank you. I'm 29 BTW, not 11. I notice you can't provide
any quotes from me saying I was better than anyone else. Someone asked about
witch blood and I answered them. The only ones who started scoffing were the
(evidently unblooded) book-taught neo-wiccanites who evidently felt left out or
something. I plainly stated several times that magic is not exclusively the
property of those who have witches in their family yet people like yourself
continue to put words in my mouth.

So please, go and fetch me the quote where I said that I was better than anyone
else. Do it now, or shut up.

And learn to spell. YOU write like an 11 year old.

Witchcraft and Magick begin in the soul. I do believe in natural witches
(I am one so I'd damn well better believe it ;->), but as far as I am
concerned, it has nothing to do with your blood, it is something within the
very core of your being. I do not claim to know whether or not everyone has
this or not...perhaps everyone does and it just lies dormant in some people
until it is awakened. whatever it is, it is a spark within the soul that,
once fanned into flame, is a truly wondrous thing and a force to be reckoned
with. Deep within each one of us who truly claim the identity of
*Witch*, runs a passion for knowledge of things magickal and spiritual, we
have this "knowing" (for lack of a better term) that this is who and what we
are.
We have been called by whatever force, whatever name you choose to give it,
that runs through every form of life and non-living object in this world (at
least). We have a purpose; perhaps to help bridge the gaps between the
planes and restore balance. Every work of magick helps to restore that
balance. Like a muscle that doesn't get used, it atrophies(sp?). When we
perform magickal workings, we excersize those parts of our brains, our
souls, and the energies around us. This brings strength and balance to
whatever it is that holds this world and the other planes together.

Just my .02,
Blessings,

If.

Actually, it didn't begin in Africa at all. Two years ago, archaeologists found
paint-making tools in Austrailia dated to 40,000 years OLDER than the remains
of Lucy.

I'm still a bit confused about this. Natural witches are born, they have
natural talent that eventually becomes focused. Normal people (using the
term loosely) who are not born into witchcraft families, or families with
"weird women" in them, can learn witchcraft and eventually become as talented
at it as the people who are born witchcraft. There's apparently no way to
tell a witch who was "born" from a witch who was "made" - no blood test, just
an examination of your family tree to see if you have people who might have
been witches, or geniuses, or any one of a number of things. That's my
understanding of what's been discussed here - not that I really believe it.
I liked candles and incense from a young age, and we have a number of odd
women in the family. That doesn't make me a witch. That makes me a guy from
an Anglican family with some strange aunts. This whole "born" vs. "made"
discussion appears to have one major failing - no one has established any
definite criteria for separating the "born" witches from the "made" witches.
Anyone can say that Great-Grandma was a witch because she hung a horseshoe
over the door for good luck. That doesn't make them a "born" witch. Nor does
someone who comes from a long line of good Catholics become immediately
disqualified from being a "born" witch. Several branches up in the family
tree, there may be someone who had "the sight" or prophetic dreams. I find
this entire discussion amazing. There's no way to TELL if someone has "the
blood" or not, according to what I've read here. There's just any number of
totally arbitrary standards held by people who claim that they're "natural"
witches. Does this make sense? Not to me.

Re: You either have the blood or you don't...

Sometimes it's impossible to keep my mouth shut/mind calm/fingers
still.

This whole thing is rather like the add in the paper "For Sale: Full
Blooded Cocker Spaniel." "WTF?" says my coworker at the Animal
Hospital.
"Is that 'as opposed to For Sale: One Quart Low?"

Check yer DNA at the door.

I came back over here a while back to see if anyone was discussing
Strega. In a search for information (the Leland text, to be precise)
I came upon Grimasi and ordered her book. I'm not fam trad ...but
hop forward an 100 years and check the DNA.. think about it... BUT
this dependancy on the physical only? Come on people.. yer roots
are showing but your crown is dying. *IF* staying to 'Family' is
part of the fam trad practice, that's cool. But if not ? If
stone skipping your spirit through/in/across the gene pool is your
spirit's
journey and an investigation and experiental trip is fated...
could comlicate things way out of the physical realms. Eh ?

Anway... I'm still trying to find out what FamTrad Stregheria
think of 'Ways of the Strega'. ? Especially the proposed re-joining
of Tanara, Fanara and Janara. ?

I'm a big fan of PT Barnum, so which minute where YOU born?

~BUT this dependancy on the physical only?

If you think it's physical only, you haven't read ANY of this thread except the
snipes and barbs. Was that so you could compose your own while sounding
knowledgable?

~Anway... I'm still trying to find out what FamTrad Stregheria

think of 'Ways of the Strega'.

I have a special place for it, right next to Ravenwolf's "Hex Craft" ---lining
the cat box.
