Does anyone out there know of a program that allows the user to view
(without opening ) MS Outlook 2000's *.PST files?

I regularly copy my *.PST file to CD as a way of keeping old e-mail message,
contact, calendars, etc with the hopes that I could restore them for viewing
if my system suffered serious damage. My understanding though, is that when
I want to view these "backup" *.PST files, they have to be copied back to
the hard drive, then have the "read only" attribute turned off, then tell MS
Outlook to use the *.PST before it can be viewed. I think MS Outlook
requires the *.PST file to be read/write capable before it can even open the
*.PST file. If this is true then the user cannot use MS Outlook to view the
*.PST files burned to CD. Please correct me if I am mistaken on this
matter.

If there is a *.PST viewer out there that can view such files on a CD, or
for some other reason has the "Read Only" attribute set, please let me know.

Thank you for your time.

You don't have to go through all the hassle just to poke around in it (as
you detailed, I snipped). You can open it (from any available location,
even on the CD) in Outlook (File>Open and you should see .pst as an option).
You can view (and even copy/paste) items out of folders in the .pst file
without moving it to your HD or affecting your current .pst file.

Sir,

I tried your suggestion on both a Win 98 and Win 2K machine both using MS
Office 2000 with Outlook. In both cases, when attempting to "open" the
*.PST file (located on a CD) from MS Outlook's toolbar File Open command, I
received the following error message "Properties for this information
service must be defined prior to use". HOWEVER, when I copied the *.PST
file to my hard drive then using Windows Explorer and removing the "check
mark" from the Read Only attribute, your suggestion worked.

Perhaps I am missing a step somewhere when attempting to open the *.PST file
directly from the CD, please enlighten me.

My original question still stands, Does anyone know of a file viewer/browser
that allows the user to work with MS Outlook 2000 *.PST files which are
archived to a Read Only medium, such as when archived to a CD?

Very Respectfully,

Craig Knapp

As the man suggested I tried opening the *.PST file (on CD) using the MS
Outlook 2000 File Open command, I received an error message to the effect
that this is an invalid function. However, I copied the *.PST from the CD
to my hard drive, removed the check mark from the Read Only attribute using
Windows Explorer, and was able to open and view the file using MS Outlook.

Therefore, my original question still stands. Does anyone know of a program
that allows one to view/browse *.PST files that have been archived to a
non-writeable medium such as a closed CD-R?

Very Respectfully,

Craig Knapp

Hi Guy,

I tell you "why":

It's NOT /commercial/, I guess.

Chances are, that it's simply /criminal/!

I bet, this "file viewer" is nothing else than a Trojan or something.

That's by far the most common reason for Spam, at all - especially when it refers to any kind of software.

Cheers,

Acamas
