It is somewhat interesting that Microsoft has the user go through all
these hoops of complex I.D. codes. One day at work while reinstalling Win 98
on a crashed computer, we inadvertently entered the wrong I.D. number and
discovered that it didn't make a darned bit of difference. So then we
experimented and discovered that any one of the 10 CD's we have will install
with any of the other numbers.
What is Microsoft's point of these long complicated numbers if they mean
nothing? Why not make it a lot easier for the user and simply enter "USER"?

Sorry BB Was not referring to you. I was referring to the original poster
whom asked for the serial number. Fair play to you for reporting it.

Different types of CD's have different numbers, there also appear to
be batches that work with different sets of numbers.

OEM's, retail upgrade, and retail full version would likely each
require different sets of codes.

I hope that this helps. 8-).

Gotcha. All ten of our CD's are OEM, first version so maybe that is why

Did you honestly believe that each of the individual CD's is unique?
If this were the case we'd all be paying a *lot* more for Win98 than we are
doing.

No, BB was just helping the group out. He just wants to make sure nobody
wastes their time putting in bogus numbers. We try to save the users
here time and money.

Prior to that I didn't believe nor disbelieve. Simply had never thought
about it until then. My point was that since unique numbers do not exist,
why does Microsoft pretend that unique numbers do exist? With the severe
environment in which we use these computers, Windows crashes on a regular
basis and reinstallations are a way of life. Keeping the CD's matched to the
computers is a pain. Since we are the legal owners of 10 copies, would we be
in violation of the license if we were to use one number for all ten
computers? That would sure simplify things.

There's no pretension at all. Unique numbers *do* exist.
Each licensed user has a number unique to him. The number
identifies the license, rather than the individual copy of
the CD.

I've never seen any indication from Microsoft of anything
any different, and it never occurred to me that Microsoft
would attempt to put unique numbers on each CD, since the
manufacturing cost of doing that would very obviously be
*much* greater than simply pressing thousands or millions of
excat copies.

Unique numbers do exist, but only on the license. Each license number is
supposedly unique & I have never heard of a case where there were duplicate
numbers. The media itself is not unique, due to the reason I mentioned
earlier - cost.

As everybody else is saying, the registration key is in fact unique, but its
generated using a specific parameter which is unique to that version. In
answer to your question, you are not in violation of the license is you use
one number for all computers, as long as you have purchased the licenses,
and are in posession of the license agreement....
My company has a bit over 200 computers, all of which came with a windows 98
CD/license, but the way we work, we have a master image which we clone
out...one install, one serial number, 200 machines, but we own the
licenses...thats it...
