Windows XP SP3

I have a Canon A550 digital camera with a SunDisk 2 GB memory card. I
have had NO problems with this. I regularly move photos from the memory
card to my PC.

Today, I bought a Gigaware 4 GB memory card in anticipation of a long
vacation later this year. I used my Canon camera to format the card per
the "Camera User Guide". (Yes, I read the manuals.) I took some shots
and was later able to view them on my camera. However, when I plugged
the memory card into the appropriate slot on my PC tower, Windows XP
failed to recognize that it was present.

How can I use this memory card? Is it the card? Or is it Windows XP?
I noticed my daughter had a similar problem with the memory card from
her own Canon camera on my PC.

It's your card reader, it only recognizes SDSC, NOT SDHC.

SDSC (SD): 1 MB to 2 GB
SDHC: 4 GB to 32 GB
SDXC: ≥32 GB to 2 TB

There's also the possibility that it's XP. There is a way to install
SDHC support which I only found out about *after* I'd installed Vista,
and the card reader in my Toshiba Satellite suddenly recognised SDHC cards.

I don't know if it'll work in your case, and I no longer have an XP
laptop to try it on.

Apparently, the fix for KB934428 is for SP 1 or SP 2. It won't install
for Windows XP SP3 because SP3 is later. However, I will do some
searching in Microsoft's KB.

I got an adapter that should allow me to use a SDHC via a USB slot.
However, the adapter has large shoulders that prevent it from being
plugged into my tower's recessed USB slots, either in front or in back.

I have a couple of 6-inch and 12-inch USB extension cables that I use
in those situations.

I have two extension cables permanently plugged into the USB 2 sockets
at the rear of the tower unit.
