I have a really old (c. 2000) PC that still seems to work well albeit
with the limitations of a PC made at in c. 2000. I also have a
Windows ME CD that I used to install WinME on the PC with a completely
clean install that included completely reformatting the HD. I have
encountered the following problems.

- I have been unable to find a service pack for WinME
- I have been unable to install ZoneAlarm, AVG, SuperAntivirus or
Malwarebytes. They all say that a later version of Windows is
required.
- Would WAMPServer run on WinME?

Any advice would be most appreciated,
Peter.

Another problem is that modern versions of browsers won't work and
many sites now require at least MSIE 7.0 (or its equivalent in other
products) or you will get lockups or garbage at best or no permitted
connection at all.

Cheers, Phred.

BTW: I'm still using IE6.0sp1 as my default browser, almost exclusively, and it works fine - in most cases.

OK, you have to make some adjustments such as blocking some URL actions as a default and unblock'em individually, depending on your demands to the functionality of a respective website. However, that's finally even faster and safer than surfing has been ever before, and you can keep control of what's happening in the background, e.g. blocking any marketing networks like facebook, doubleclick etc. Most websites detect (or misdetect) IE6 as a mobile device, so the pages they deliver to you, are less complex - just made for smaller screens of mobiles with non-standard browsers. Anyway, I prefer this by far since it's better for reading and keeping concentrated.

Hi Greg,

WindowsUpdate.com (now MicrosoftUpdate.com) has ended its life cycle for Windows 2000 and IE 6 already last year. Hence, there will be no update support any more for Windows ME too, I suppose.

In addition, all official update sites for IE6 or minor have been shut down. Don't waste your time searching around! It's just frustrating. (Or did you already find something? Then let us know!)

As for IE6, I have a FULL setup file in English for Windows 2000 laying around here, anywhere on any old hard disk. I just have to find it. It's about 12 MB or something, and it includes all downloaded files for a local installation on a Windows 2000 (x86) machine. I just don't know whether it will do it for WME too. Maybe, some of the files will be different. However, most of the files should be the same.

If you're interested, just leave a message here, or drop me a line to my NNTP email address. (Remove the "invalid"!) However, be patient, please. I don't look into my email or news accounts every day.

| A neighbor gave me his old 2001 vintage WinME
