Engagement Portrait

to Sears, since they are affordable and my sister has half price
coupons per sheet. I was wondering if anyone knew how they were for
this type of picture. I know that Sears is popular for kid's pictures
and poses with cute backgrounds, but will I get quality from them for
an engagement picture? Micah and I don't have many pictures of
ourselves, so we want it to look great. In short, I was just wondering
if anyone has dealt with them before and what their experiences were.

Uhm. My personal recommendation would be to avoid them. Sears
"photographers" are not photographers, but camera operators who have
been taught how to do a handful of simple poses and trip the shutter.
You will never see a Sears (or Walmart or JCPenny's or whoevers)
photographer adjust lights so that they bring out the best in the
subject, nor will you ever find one of their photographers who changes
lenses or films or moves the camera from where it has been bolted down
for stability.
Honestly they are great for those every three month photos of babies
where you have to send a dozen "see how he's grown" photos to every
relative under the sun, but I wouldn't recommend them for real quality.

of them, and one of my favorites of them. Go to Sears...just spend the
good money on the wedding pics.

wedding, and I was planning on checking at Sears for a nice white dress.
(Big poofy things aren't for me!) It happens.... Maybe we'll do pictures

To Joe and all of you Big City Folk:
Believe it or not, there are places in the U.S. that don't have Sax Fifth
Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Lord&Taylor, Nordstrom, etc. within a day's driving
distance and
for these folks, Sears or even Walmart may well be "where it's at". You
can choose either to look down your citified noses at the hinterland and
sneer, or think about what it's like to live in the boonies where you DON'T
have a choice of service providers, and try to make some helpful
suggestions to these people.
Either way, it's not nice to make fun of serious inquiries just because
they're outside your experience.

You're right, of course. And, I know what it's like - I, myself,
once lived in Kemblesville, PA - 15 whole miles from a supermarket!

Actually, my sister lived in Bethel, AK and Ganado, AZ and now lives
in Tahlequah, OK - so I do have an idea, anyway. I'll never forget
her joy when they built the grocery store in Window Rock - she could
buy ice cream again! It wouldn't melt on the trip back from Gallup!
Anyway, my reply was out of line, and more geared toward the
original poster's characterization of photography prices in another
thread. But, I shouldn't mock people, especially out here in
public.

I wouldn't doubt that it is. Just as McDonalds has signed a contract to
put franchises in Wal-Marts across the nations, I would suspect that
Olan Mills (which is a franchise operation) has signed a contract with
K-Mart to put "mini-studios" in their stores.

For some of us, its not a case of being out in the boonies, its a money
thing. My fiancé and I are more interested in investing in our dream
home than we are in buying fancy dresses to be worn only once. Plus, we
want an intimate ceremony, so only 17 people are invited to the actual
wedding. I guess things are different for those who aren't independently
wealthy!

buy quality. Many photographers will include engagement photos in their
wedding packages. My fiance does the engagement sitting free, and you get
the pics free too if you sign. He does this so you can see what his work
makes you look like before you sign the contract. I'm sure other
photographers do something like that too.
