Hi -- Just because I hadn't had photos done in like 10 years, I had some
photos taken at Sears. They were all in focus, and that's great, but
adult photos aren't the same as kid photos. Sears does *no* retouching,
no "softening" of any of the photo, and for me, the lighting wasn't that
great -- Even though I ironed the outfit I wore, the lighting really
emphasized wrinkles that appeared. I was not overly pleased.
A couple years later, my sister and I had photos done at Penney's for
mother's day. The photos were a bit better, but when we were ordering,
the clerk asked simply "which photo do you like best," rather than,
"which photo do you want for the gargantuanly huge print with the
featured package." So, we didn't get the package in the distribution we
wanted, and they refused to reprint anything even though their clerk
didn't explain that she was in fact taking our order for the package --
there was no secret made that we were her first "solo" customers and that
she was under some review and supervision. So: photo quality, a little
better, but stay alert and watch carefully. Penneys does offer some
coupons.
Then last year, I went to one of those Glamour Shots places for the
valentine's day present for Don. Now, a lot more can go wrong here
because they actually do your hair and makeup for you, but it was kind of
fun because you can try different outfits, more flexibility with the
photo styles and stuff *plus* they polish the photos a lot more nicely.
You cannot tell that's me in those photos. It's a lot of fun, and it can
really put you in a different spin if you let them, but they do offer
less of the "makeup" stuff, so you have some control.
Best bet: If you really do want this to look nice, figure out how much
you can afford to spend (as opposed to chipping away at what you're
spending on the wedding and/or the rest of your life) and then check out
your friends' pictures from the local sears. Some department store photo
studio people might be more creative or diligent than others, and if you
happen to be in an area with one that doesn't suck, go for it. If you
notice that your local glamour shots/olan mills is having a special, you
might try going in for a seating and getting just a few photos, then
buying the rest of the package later on but BEFORE their offer times out.
If prices in your area are such that you might be able to go to a private
studio, ask around. High school seniors, other wedding couples in your
area, even some anniversary couples might be able to give you decent
references if you have enough budgeted for this service.
If you realize that the Sears photographer you were planning on using
can't be bothered to make sure all the cheerio crumbs are off kids'
outfits and their noses aren't crusty, or that the kids look really
stressed, or even if there are over and under exposures, then HOLD ON to
your money, do *not* waste it on pictures you'll probably hate. Your
budget is more important than pictures that will probably not do you
justice.
In this case, an option to really icky pictures you don't like or blowing
your budget might be if you go through the pictures you've taken
informally over the past couple months -- christmas, birthdays,
valentine's day, "I've only got like five more exposures on this roll,
let's get the Wallgreen's girl to take our picture" -- and see if there's
a picture that you actually like. It's okay if the background isn't
absolutely perfect or that you're wearing your sorority sweatshirt; heck,
that kind of thing can even be taken out digitally or covered by
matting. The important part is your happy, smiling, excited faces
beaming out and radiating how happy you are to be together.
you also might check "Olan Mills" ( sp?)
they are fairly reasonable if they are in your area
one thing you might want to check though is if they will give you a
"newspaper Print"

Ah yes, Olan Mills, the standard of fine photography...
;-)
Check with local photography schools or the photography department
of the local university. They don't always do stuff for the general
public, but you might get lucky. My htb had his photos for his student
id done by the university photography department because he happened to
be in the area, and it's the best photo of him we have- good background,
good lighting, tiny bit of overexposure in the negatives that was
corrected in the final prints, etc.
I think we got a stack of small photos (10 or so) and a
proof strip (which is just the negatives exposed directly onto a
piece of paper for ease of viewing) and the negatives for about
10ukp or so. (~$15)
