Any ideas? I'm pissed off to say the least, I spose its just someone
after free internet access, but could someone acces my lappy from it?
Unless they are actually a hacker, I guess you had no encryption or
WEP enabled on your router?
If they are quite dim they may have connected to your router
unwittingly. I'd have a quick browse on their connected machine for
shared files, then when you get bored kick it off and dont let him on
again.
If you dont want anyone to use your router, use WPA encryption or an
access mask limiting MAC addresses.
Hi, WEP is on, so someone has DEINATELEY had the nouse to hack it, so
I'm wondering if theyre that bright they might be able to get into my
PC, is it a job for the rozzers?
Hi,
WEP is pretty much the same as no encryption, its WPA you need. No
nouse is needed to hack it, plenty of automated tools available online
to do it.
Saying that, accessing WEP protected networks is technically illegal,
and could be prosecuted. Quite possible that they could access files
on your laptop comitting further offences.
Realistically though they are doing it 'because they can'. Stick two
fingers up at them by enabling WPA.
has my router got it? belkin 54g
Assuming its this model:

then, yes.
Manuals available on the Belkin site.
cheers just set it up, can it be hacked now or am I safer?
Hi its WPA PSK with TKIP encryption??? is this OK, I'd still like to
find out whos at it though so I could give them a decent smack in the
mouth, it's a fkin liberty !!
Yep - thats far more secure. Would potentially take hundreds of years
to crack. Nothings perfect though! Use a long passphrase!
Just Google 'crack WPA' for the proof.
But practically speaking no-one will get in.
In terms of working out who is connecting to you, let them connect
again and have a nose about their system, there may well be clues.
Failing that break in to all the houses in a 20 metre radius and check
out their MAC addresses! :)

Two cautioned over wi-fi 'theft'
Last Updated: Tuesday, 17 April 2007, 16:22 GMT 17:22 UK
Two people have been cautioned for using people's wi-fi broadband
internet connections without permission.
Neighbours in Redditch, Worcestershire, contacted police on Saturday
after seeing a man inside a car using a laptop while parked outside a house.
He was arrested and cautioned. A woman was arrested in similar
circumstances in the town earlier this month.
BBC Midlands Today correspondent Dr David Gregory said the cases are
among the first of their kind.
He added that if people were using someone else's network to enter
illegal porn sites, for example, it would be very difficult to trace them.
The man arrested at the weekend was cautioned for dishonestly
obtaining electronic communications services with intent to avoid payment.
He attracted attention from neighbours in the early morning, as he had
put up cardboard around his car windows but the light from his computer
could be seen through the back window.
West Mercia Police said people with wi-fi should follow security
advice given by their internet provider.

Assuming you are a warez monkey (and why would you be here if you paid
for software ) then I think you'd be better off just letting it go, no
harm has been done and you dont want to put your head above the
parapet do you?

My new sig is in the post,
I could put up the other laptop if someone came round, thats got nowt
on it
but the other point is that the 'intruder' will be stealing your
bandwidth....slowing your surfing down, including downloading.

Listen to yourself.
Lets be serious.
"Officer, an unknown source is stealing my bandwidth."
"what?"
"my wifi, they are taking my internets!!!!111one"
"change your password dickhead"
"but, but my wifi is weak and there isn't many houses... if you could get
warrants...."
"get the fuck out of here"
My suggestion is to change your password/encryption method and get over it.
IF you did want to 'trace' them then you will need to wait until they are
connected, replace
your attenna on the Access Point with a directional beam/yagi. Stick it on a
stand and slowly rotate
it until they regain connection then you can pinpoint the direction they are
in.
To go further you will need to this from other locations and
cross/triangulate.
All in all it's probably too much effort.
If you were more concerned about securing your connection than giving them a
'decent smack in the
mouth' you wouldn't be in this position.
Because this is real life?
So set up a rule to exlude connections from that MAC address.
I'd just charge him Ł100 per 10MB or threaten him with theft of broadband,
on my router when you connect it gives the computer name as well, when they
where doing a xp install they might have just put there name BINGO
