HELP: Method for Finding Missing Parts

I was wondering if anyone can help:

I've been trying to find missing parts by using a net search engine.
When I find the missing part, I download it via the browser - Mosaic
or Netscape. However, the parts always come down corrupted.

1) Is the problem on the search engine side or the browser?

2) Is there a way to get the part directly from the search engine
site, without going through an http interface? If so, would this get
around the corruption problem?

3) I was under the impression that the search engine, Alta Vista in
this case, collects an index of articles which exist on other machines
on the net. I could have sworn this was true when I first used Alta
Vista. Now all the references are to the Alta Vista site, which is
not accessible via anon. FTP. Is this correct?
