Could someone please tell me the difference between ships that are
"Deployed" versus ships that are "Underway." I am referring to these terms
as used in the Navy News Service Status of the US Navy. Thanks.

It has been a long time since I left the Navy but in the late '60's a
ship "Deployed" was a ship that was on duty away from its home port.
Such as a ship that had a home port in Norfolk, Va. but was "Deployed" to
the Mediterranean Sea for a 6 month tour. A ship "Underway" would be any
ship that was in the act of sailling from one point to another. A ship
could be "Deployed" but not "Underway" if it was in port someplace. I
hope this helps.

The Navy conducts "underway periods" in which ships get underway for a while
then come back to their home port, "deployments", in which they leave their
home port area but remain subordinate to their normal chain of command, such
as going to Haiti, and "out of area deployments" in which they "chop"
operational control to a different, overseas, fleet commander. "out of area
deployments" are normally conducted to the Mediterranean (6th Fleet), Western
Pacific (7th Fleet), and Indian Ocean/Persian Gulf (NAVCENT).
