The first time I ever heard that term was in the movie *Platoon*...
never in Vietnam. Generally speaking, payloads were one or the other
(called: "soft" or "hard"). Now, the same strike package might have
both napalm and 250 lb. bombs; however, they wouldn't come in at the
same time because the 250s would take out the guys laying the softies.
Basically, if you were on the ground, it didn't make a whole heck of a
lot of difference whether they were "laying snake and nape" or not;
whatever it was would really hurt if it hit you!

You certainly *could* load both; I'm saying that they weren't
*usually* loaded together on the same aircraft... but I wasn't a
zoomie, so I could be wrong... not that zoomies can't be wrong also,

As I *recall* (with geriatric dementia quickly setting in), the hard
points were incompatible; i.e., you had to change out one of the
external fixtures. Aircraft were usually set up for one or the other.
Also, the sights were different... and were frequently grease pencil
on the canopy!
It could be done, but it wasn't generally done.
