You are making this a political statement at our soldiers expense so I must
respond in kind. Our soldiers are grown Men and Women and many have access
to the Net even from Iraq and can speak for themselves.
I am proud of them and our nation for all that they have accomplished!
And at least the Commander & Chief we have today isn't cutting their budget
like the last admin did where they had to take from 3 or 4 pieces of equipt
to make one piece of equipt work. He actally cares for them (unlike the last
C&C Clinton).

No they were not. The intel agencies may have screwed up for the past

the Iraqi's can get it together by this summer and build their own defense,

Google up "troops forced to buy equipment" and see what families are doing
because the G'ment can't. Families are buying body armor, night vision
gogles and other stuff Dubya just can't seem to provide. The equipment is

130 bagels in a large tin can. Had to register the .357 with the 504 MPs,
however, was allowed to carry it while flying combat missions. Also, some
French made jungle fatigues, underwear which was unavailable to us in 1965.
50 rolls of 35mm film. 1 Jungle hammock, golf clubs, we played golf in the
LZs on occasion if the conditions were right, one case of canned fruit,
water proof bags, snake bite kit, 25 yards of parachute cord, one surplus
UHF Survival radio, bought on Canal Street in New York, surplus Army short
wave battery operated radio from WWII. All arrived by Pan Am, my wife's girl
friends father was an executive with the airline. Netting 25 Sq yards, 10
cases of steaks hijacked from the mob by the NYPD on 14th Street packed in
dry ice. one 20 lbs Swiss cheese, cooking wine, knives and forks, bug
spray, 60 lbs of lamb chops and a fresh ham packed in dry ice. 500 Hebrew
National hotdogs packed in dry ice, with mustard on the side, supplies of
food and can goods from the girls who I went to school with. From the WACS
at Ft. Rucker, 200 cup cakes, assorted candy, V-8 juice, and 50 cigars from
Colonel Tolsen, cake in tin cans from the wife of a Major at Ft. Eustis, one
TV set w19" screen to watch combat on TV via AF Radio out of Qui Nhon, we
were able to pick it up 14 miles west at An Son 1 & 2, water proof matches,
fishing rod and gear. Surplus life boat too go fishing on the Qui Nhon
river. 2 dozen bear and light game traps, we found them more effective than
using mines, candles, lamp oil, paint, nails, saws, hammers, hardware from
my uncles hardware store and a load of tin cans and sealed food jars and an
Army surplus generator bought on Canal Street NY for $55.00. BBQ grills, we
built our own in the A/C sheet metal shop when were not flying, a small
Japanese frig big enough for the hooch. Dial soap, toilet paper, powder, 235
tubes of tooth paste off the back of a truck by an Army SF SMAJ at Bragg.
200 lbs of Virginia bacon privately smoked from an Admirals daughter, she
sent her photograph in the raw as well. A fruit cake from the CO's wife,
dozens of gifts from the girls in the CO's home town and letters from a
Christain girls school in PA who all wanted to get laid. 100 lbs of
Passover goodies from some Israeli girls with letters and photos - all had
great bodies, underwear from a girl I never met ? Cake mix from a food
magazine I wrote too, 25 bottle of Kosher wine which we shared with the
Catholic chaplain. Home made venison chew sticks from a girl in KY. Assorted
medical supplies which I donated to the Flight Medical guys which was used
to help the local village kids from our family doctor. Arrows for Bruce's
cross bow, he refused to carry an M-16, stated it was against his religion ?
10 tins of pemickin, home made, great survival food. 30 cans of sardines and
20 cans of tuna. There are some pages torn out of my journal, they may have
been some other items as well. I believe my father shipped a fish net,
because we use to drag the South China sea with the helicopter off of China
Beach on occasion, seems to work well. Oh, yes, the Rhode Island Rooster
and five chickens, cant live without fresh eggs and some chicken wire. Home
made smoked lox from Katz's Deli on Houston Street and some hard salami's.
Some parts for a J-3 Cub, we found at Qui Nhon and several yards of canvas
to recover part of the plane.
Some surplus instruments from a friend who had an instrument shop for an Air
America C-45 supplied by Harry Geedes, he died last year at 85. Best
instrument repairman in the U.S.. I knew there was a reason why I joined
Army Aviation - better living conditions on the battle field. We even had a
washing machine that worked some times and taught the hooch girls how to use
it. The Vietnamese Catholic Church in Qui Nhon supplied a lot of help for
our unit and we frequently shared some of the food since they usually
brought their kids to work with them. After all you get tired of eating the
B-rations every you go cross country.
During war people will donate just about anything, the problem getting it to
Nam was effectively resolved since many of the Crew Chiefs had worked for
the airlines before being drafted or joining up, some of them were pilots as
well.

made up by the JWV. We donate money from our Post for the program. We
raised some $750.00 for it. The packages contain items the men in the field
