US soldiers in Vietnam.

There is also a very interesting computer game called NAM by GT Interactive
where the VC shout 'Xin Loi!' at you as they run around shooting at you.

Can anyone help me out by translating it?

Depends on usage alright. During the Vietnam war (xin loi pronounced 'sin loi' by US and Allied troops) use of the term went from an apology to slang for 'tough sh*t" as they did their duties in a war zone. As in "Sin loi, my boy" . . . as an enemy was sighted in, etc. Over time, 'sin loi' became a crude way to express "Fu*k you!" to anybody with emotions ranging from 'hate' behind it or as in joking with buddies. As crude and cruel as that may sound, in a war zone everything about human existence is different from anything you have ever known, if you have not served in a war zone yourself. People are capable of anything no matter their background or demeanor and it comes out under the extreme stress that occurs on battle fields. Dark humor is one coping skill for helping deal with the extreme stress that comes with war. Sin Loi by our troops was most commonly said (in my own experience) with the meaning "Tough S*it" and the Vietnamese did not like the fact that we used the term that way. To that I say: sin loi.
