Pronounciation of Vietnamese place names.

Hi everyone,
As I read various books on the war I'm being bombarded with Vietnamese names
(mainly locations). as these are not phonetically spelt in the books I have no
way of knowing if I'm pronouncing them correctly.
So ever the optomist (although occasionally cynical), I thought that if I jotted
a few of em down here someone might come along with their phonetic spelling. So
I stand some sort of chance on learning how to pronounce em correctly!
EXAMPLE; Na Trang = Na Chang (think this one's correct in it's pronounciation?).
Here's a few others I'm having trouble with:-
Bien Hoa.
Plei Mrong.
Phong Dien.
Van Xa.
Ninh Hoa.
Dau Tieng.
Soc Trang.
Ta Bat.
Also having trouble with getting my tongue around the following Viet ranks:-
Thieu Uy.
Troung Uy.
Well guys what do ya reckon, can anyone help me?!

We'd love to help you out but perhaps we should wait a few days to let
phill coleman, a.k.a. The American War Lie-Buh-Rerry, answer these for
you. After all, ole phill was an SF Captain stationed in Bien Hoa and
I'm sure he's up to speed on all the rest. The AWL is, after all, THE
SOURCE for these tricky questions.

a few friends of mine seem to be quite often referring to this place where
some had some really bad times. A 1/46th and 196th event? March 1969?

My recommendation is to avoid 'tien phouc' at all costs.

The only words that truly had significant meaning to Grunts,
Boonierats, Reconners, and so on, that were quite easy to pronounce are
as follows:
1. "Boom Boom!"
2. "Smoke!"
3. "Stand Down!"
4. "Incoming!"
5. "Ammo!"
6. "MEDIC!"
7. "Get your shit on, we're going out!"
8. "Gettin' Short!"
9. "There's The Freedom Bird!"
As for the vietnamese pronounciations to the places in your request!
You'll eventually get em ALL! Maybe not correctly. But, you'll get
there!

Dear Ted:
"Wee," or "Quy" is phonetically almost the same in
VNese. In the case of Phuoc Long, the most close I can
think of is "fooc long." "Long" in VNese is like "long"
in English.
