716th Military Police, TET 1968, Jan 31, 1968, death in an alley

the alley in Gia Dinh, Saigon Vietnam and lost their lives
there.
Look their names up on the Vietnam Wall. Do some
research and locate their obits and stories about their deaths.
Be angry with someone if you will but do not say these
men were not in the alley, fighting for their lives. The alley
was just outside the Tan Son Nhut main gate.
3rd Field Hospital was approximately 1/2 mile from the gate.
BOQ #3 was just outside the gate.
There were additional men in and around the alley and some
of them McDonnell help save. I do not believe that any of those
survivor's would say anything negative about Mac's duties.
Someone who knows what happened that day put Mac in for the
Silver Star award. The US Army verifed the facts of the attack and
awarded the Silver Star.

In September of 1999, members of the battalion traveled to Fort Leonard
Wood, Missouri for the dedication of two new facilities supporting the new
Military Police School. The SGT Michael A. Grieve Complex, a billeting
facility
for Military Police students, was named for SGT Michael Grieve of A Company,
716th Military Police Battalion. SPC Daniel's Hall, part of the new MP
training
facilities, was named in honor of SPC Charles L. Daniel of C Company, 716th
Military Police Battalion. Both soldiers gave their lives and were awarded
posthumously for gallantry for their actions during the 1968 Tet Offensive
in Saigon.

During the last part of January 1968 the 716th MP Battalion was composed of
companies-
A, B, and C and they were reinforced by the 527th MP Company and Companies C
and D
of the 52nd Infantry. Company A lost three (3) men in the battle for Saigon

Silver Star

Let's see... that alley was directly across the busy street from the
front entrance to Tan Son Nhut, correct? It wasn't but a few meters
from the main gate, as I recall. In '70, you sprinted across traffic
one way, hopped the median, then confronted opposing traffic before
finding refuge in the darkness of the alley.
I lost many an MP pursuit in those winding alleys therein... and many
Vietnamese denizens thereof who would have liked me much better in a
box shipped home.
One night in early '75, as the whole operation was going south, I hit
a distribution point in that alley. They had several kilos of base
morphine on hand, of which I took the opportunity to relieve them at
the point of a .45. As I ran from the building with the stash, I took
a wrong turn and ran headlong into a shitter... then one of the
"security" people grabbed me and spun me around. I leveled my piece
and pulled the trigger! < CLICK > (I had forgotten to chamber it!) I
don't know why he fell back with his hands up... but I made my getaway
by cyclo, anyway.
That was just ahead of the Northern push into the South. It didn't do
me any good, of course. Such deeds usually don't. There seems to be
a force of truth and right in the universe... I just didn't know that
at the time. Anyway, all of my wealth ended up at the bottom of Vung
Tau harbor.
And that's all I have to say about that.

When it was suggested he speak with an attorney, and then let my

order to verify the award of the Silver Star to Mr. McDonnell you chose to
ignore the information and continue your diatribes. I'll report that when
the actual wording of the citation for the Silver Star was given to you -
asked Mr. McDonnell "How come you sat under that truck for 5 hours when
others were under fire and
needed help? "

The voters can then decide if they wish to reappoint a person who belittles

On April 8, 1968, **<Note: This is 4 days after the action where his
actions resulted in the award of the Silver Star, which is reported
below.>** Captain Cleland was the Battalion Signal Officer for the 2nd
Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division during the Battle of
Khe Sanh.[3]
On April 8, with a month left in his tour, Cleland was ordered to set up a
radio relay station on a nearby hill. A helicopter flew him and two soldiers
to the treeless top of Hill 471, east of Khe Sanh. Cleland knew some of the
soldiers camped there from Operation Pegasus. He told the pilot he was going
to stay a while. Maybe have a few beers with friends.
When the helicopter landed, Cleland jumped out, followed by the two
soldiers. They ducked beneath the rotors and turned to watch the liftoff.
Cleland reached down to pick up the grenade he believed had popped off his
flak jacket. The blast slammed him backward, shredding both his legs and one
arm. He was 25 years old...
David Lloyd was a gung-ho, 19-year-old enlisted Marine, son of a Baltimore
ship worker, who went to Vietnam because he "wanted to kill Communists."
On April 8, 1968, he was in a mortar pit on a hill near Khe Sanh when he
heard an explosion. Shrapnel bounced off his flak jacket. He ran to the
injured officer, a man named Max Cleland. 'Hold on there, captain,' Lloyd
told Cleland. 'The chopper will be here in a minute.'
Lloyd took off his web belt and tied it around one of Cleland's shredded
legs. When the medics arrived, he left to help another injured soldier — one
of the two who had gotten off a helicopter with Cleland.
That soldier was crying. 'It was mine,' he said, 'it was my grenade.'
According to Lloyd, the private had failed to take the extra precaution that
experienced soldiers did when they grabbed M-26 grenades from the ammo box:
bend the pins, or tape them in place, so they couldn't accidentally
dislodge. This soldier had a flak jacket full of grenades with treacherously
straight pins, Lloyd says. "He was a walking death trap."
Mr. Cleland's Silver Star was awarded for a completely separate action:
His Silver Star citation reads:
"Captain Cleland distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on
4 April 1968 … during an enemy attack near Khe Sanh.
When the battalion command post came under a heavy enemy rocket and mortar
attack, Captain Cleland, disregarding his own safety, exposed himself to the
rocket barrage as he left his covered position to administer first aid to
his wounded comrades. He then assisted in moving the injured personnel to
covered positions. ***<Note: Extremely similar to a Silver Star citation
for a member of this newsgroup, how ironic>***
Continuing to expose himself, Captain Cleland organized his men into a
work party to repair the battalion communications equipment, which had been
damaged by enemy fire.
His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the
military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the

And whilst your depiction of the actions of Cleland in the grenade incident
are not accurate (he was not "jumping on a grenade", he was in the process
of attempting to retrieve a grenade which had fallen off a soldiers
equipment when it went off - severely injuring him. It is immaterial - both
Kerry and Cleland were awarded medals of valor for their service in Vietnam,
and that fact that the United States Military saw fit to recognize that
service is good enough for me.

McDonnell for belittling his actions in Vietnam during an incident which
resulted in him being awarded the Silver Star for his selfless actions
taken on January 31, 1968 in an alley in Saigon when he volunteered to
provide medical aid to dying and wounded MP's. The United States Military
recognized that Mr. McDonnell's selfless act was worthy of this nation's
third highest award for valor. He also received a purple heart for
injuries.
