Family Told Obama NOT To Wear Soldier Son's Bracelet... Where is Media?
By Warner Todd Huston
September 28, 2008 - 03:53 ET
Barack Obama played the "me too" game during the Friday debates on
September 26 after Senator John McCain mentioned that he was wearing a
bracelet with the name of Cpl. Matthew Stanley, a resident of New
Hampshire and a soldier that lost his life in Iraq in 2006. Obama said
that he too had a bracelet. After fumbling and straining to remember the
name, he revealed that his had the name of Sergeant Ryan David Jopek of
Merrill, Wisconsin.
Shockingly, however, Madison resident Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan
Jopek, the young soldier who tragically lost his life to a roadside bomb
in 2006, recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his family
had asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his son's name
on it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the family.
There is probably more to this story than is evident. Tracy Jopek,
the soldier's mother, is an Obama supporter and gave the bracelet to
Obama after he had announced his candidacy. The father, the ex-
husband of Tracy, is not an Obama supporter.
The only evidence that this request was made is based on a single
radio interview with the ex-husband, who claims his wife sent requests
to Obama but apparently did not actually see the request himself. It
would be interesting to see if Tracy - the person who actually gave
Obama the bracelet in the first place - supports her ex-husbands
story. Until then, it's an uncorroborated anecdote by an Obama
opponent. If it does prove to actually, factually be true (you know,
supported by stuff like, oh, evidence like a copy of the message sent,
or at least corroborating statements from the mother, etc) then it
does not speak well of Obama.

You mean Mike Griffith is manipulating the evidence to support
the story *he* wants to tell? Gosh, we've never seen anything
like that before, have we?
Hey, Mike, have you learned anything about atrocities yet?

Unless the bracelet was willed to the mother, I'd suspect the father is
half owner. The mother can't give away what doesn't belong to her.
The Solomanic solution? The situation could be resolved by the mother
getting the half of the bracelet with the first name and the father with
the half with the last name. After all the last name is the father's.
Then Obama can wear Ryan "Whatshisname's" bracelet. It would be easier
for him to remember, too.
Mike's been really rather quiet about the discrediting of the Taney
"arrest" story.
Not according to Fox & Friends - Steve, Bryan and Gretchen.
He was asked by the mother and father to not use the son's name
politically.
She confirmed that she asked him and also confirmed that until last
week's debate, she was not aware of any time that Obama had brought it
up since the request was made. She also said she is satisfied with
the manner in which he did so. (One should remember that it was McCain
that brought up the subject of bracelets in the first place, not Obama
- Obama was simply pointing out that he, too, had a bracelet in
response to McCain's comment about having one.).

That used to be called "one-upmanship".
story topping
1. Noun. Conversational ploy seeking one-upmanship by articulating
a more extreme, better (or worse), more impressive comeback responding
to a previous utterance.
"Oh, yeah? Well, I've got one too! "
In the 4th grade, it's usually prefixed with, "Na, na,... na, na na.
Smarty-pants! I've got one too!"
Ole Smirky should go on Saturday Night Live. He thinks he's quite a
facial contortionist and comedian.
Actually, that doesn't quite fit your definition since Obama wasn't
going beyond McCain's statement, he was making an equivalent one. On
the other hand, if you want a good example of one-upmanship, one need
look no further than last week's "I'll see your bipartisan statement
and raise you a 'campaign cancellation'" stunt.
He does an awful lot of looking down his nose. He not only shows his
disdain for those on his right in the audience, his head swivels like a
windshield wiper past the center and gives it to those on his left as
well.
Am I the only one who takes note of this?
Nice non sequitur.
Oh, you and probably all the other Republican/neo-con trashers.
Put yourself up there Howie, and we can trash you and your "looks"??
Nice non sequitur.
I take it you agree that he has an "I" ailment.
Looks has nothing to with it. It's the "I" problem.

OO Hey, Mike, have you learned anything about atrocities yet?
Speaking for myself, I just saw a photo of Mary Lincoln. Does that qualify as an 'atrocity'?

Mom Supports Obama's Bracelet Mention
Tracy Jopek "Ecstatic" About Democrat's Use Of Her Son's Name At
Debate

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 29, 2008
(AP) The mother of a Wisconsin soldier who died in Iraq says she was
"ecstatic" when Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama mentioned
during Friday's debate the bracelet she gave him in honor of her son.
Tracy Jopek of Merrill told The Associated Press on Sunday she was
honored that Obama remembered Sgt. Ryan David Jopek, who was killed in
2006 by a roadside bomb.
Jopek criticized Internet reports suggesting Obama, D-Ill., exploited
her son for political purposes.
"I don't understand how people can take that and turn it into some
garbage on the Internet," she said.
Jopek acknowledged e-mailing the Obama campaign in February asking
that the presidential candidate not mention her son in speeches or
debates. But she said Obama's mention on Friday was appropriate
because he was responding after Sen. John McCain, the Republican
nominee, said a soldier's mother gave him a bracelet.
"I've got a bracelet, too, from Sergeant - from the mother of Sergeant
Ryan David Jopek, given to me in Green Bay," Obama said during the
debate. "She asked me, 'Can you please make sure another mother is not
going through what I'm going through?' No U.S. soldier ever dies in
vain because they're carrying out the missions of their commander in
chief. And we honor all the service that they've provided."
Jopek says Obama's comment rightfully suggested there's more than one
viewpoint on the war

Were you in the kitchen when the great obfuscator had to refer to his
wrist to recollect the surname of SGT Ryan "Whatshisname"?
Who's the phony?
Again, a non sequitur.
Maybe to the blind.
The first non sequitur was when you changed the subject. The second
non sequitur was when you made the statement "I take it that you agree
that he as an 'I' ailment". The non sequitur is that you assumed I
agreed with your statement, a conclusion not supported either by my
statement or logic (and thus, "does not follow", as non sequitur
translates from Latin).
