Today from Amazon I received the Loeb Classical Library volume
containing Cicero's essay "De Senectute" (On Old Age). William
Armistead Falconer began the translation while he sight-translated the
piece to his uncle, Gen. H. B. Armistead, C.S.A., the latter ill and
confined to his room.

You never know where those acw connections will turn up.

Falconer's two-page Preface is testimony to the place that the classics
once occupied among educated folk.

No, I advocate legal measures to identify, apprehend, incarcerate,
try, convict and sentence Southern White Boys like yourself. As far as
my cultural level is concerned, Fred Flintstone is my role model,
along with the bridge-and-tunnel types over in Jersey.

I enjoy a ball game, beer and hot dogs. I stopped going to the opera
about ten years ago.

You finally figured out the operas were in Italian. That's why you couldn't understand the words. I can just picture you going to the opera in your leopard skin tux, pedalling your but off in the granite car. Hope those mocassins have good, heavy soles. LOL

You give him too much credit, Hugh. He isn't a "ten"or; he's a zero.

You tell lies about things that you pretend to know. That's what makes
you a thug.

H. L. is an old fart pretending to be a serious student of the White
South. He is a product of the White South, nothing more. His family
were ante-bellum rapists and murderers.

MiMi bragged that he'd read 5000 lines of Latin verse. But the Aeneid
alone contains nearly 10,000 lines. Thus Mito Minister's Latinity is as
flimsy as his knowledge of "the South", which he admits he picked up by
watching tv.

To an educated person the meaning was clear. But you have beg for more

There's nothing to explain. I was forced to study Latin in high
school. We translated Caesar and wrote dirty Latin jokes on the walls.
You read Latin now, in your dotage. Who's the braggart?
