If I recall my civil war history correctly, when prisoners were caught they
often had to be left and come back for later. As I understand, a technique
was used for tying a person to a tree without the use of rope. It involved
finding the proper diameter tree and somehow crossing the arms and legs in
such a way that a person's own physics kept him to the tree.

Do you know of this technique or where to look it up?

Many thanks!
Doug

This was a technique often referred to as the "Looney Tunes" technique.
What you do is first run over the guy with a steamroller so that he is nice
and flat as well as flexible. You then can tie him up in all sorts of
knots. You just have to be careful because they can pop back to normal
without any warning. See also, "anvil tossing".

We used to try to do this when we were kids and living in a rural setting.
The kid to be "tied up" would sit on the ground with his legs wrapped
around the proper sized tree. Then someone would tuck his right foot under
his left leg, then hold it there while someone else else tucked his left
foot under his right let. It was pretty uncomfortable as I recall and not
too effective. A kid could always work his way loose in a few seconds.
I imagine it would be more effective with an adult (and much more
uncomfortable) since they are not as limber as children. We didn't do
anything with teh arms as you describe. Maybe involving the arms is a
variation. Gosh, hadn't thought about this is years.

My dad used to do the same thing to me wrestling, except he used his arm and hand
as the tree. When they are in that position, they can be pushed flat on their
back with the fingertips. You are fairly powerless, becuase most all leverage is
lost.
