Slowly working my way through Cicero's essay "De Amicitia" or "On
Friendship". I'm also falling back to regroup after a failed attack on
Tacitus's "Agricola", a work in praise of his father-in-law. Tacitus is
extremely difficult for me, um in Latin I mean.

I like to keep my "cultured despisers"* up-to-date on my reading.

* arch reference to Schleiermacher's famous "On Religion: Speeches to
Its Cultured Despisers".

I don't know Latin from Swahili. But I am a great admirer of
Tacitus. His interpretation of the Jewish Exodus is great.
Actually -- one might better call his version the "Expulsion".

Another thing I find interesting is where he suggests the Jews may
well have been descended from an Ethiopian tribe. Don't you know
that thought would give some Baptists nightmares ?
