I am looking for information on the Landis Battery, CSA field
artillery. The only info I have at this time is:

Formed as MO milita unit near St. Joe., MO in early 1860's [probable]
Surrendered at Vickberg in 1864 [Fairly reliable]
At some point, they were transferred east (i.e. surrender location)
[surmised]

I know its not much to go on, but you gotta start somewhere.

Thanks,

Unless the parole process took longer than I thought, I suspect they
probably surrendered in 1863... :)

They don't appear on my OOB for Wilson's Creek, so they probably
were formed after August 1861 (or didn't have guns by then.)
Also can't find them on the Shiloh OOB which is a little more odd.
Perhaps they were still in Missouri/Arkansas at this time?
Also can't find them on the Chickamauga OOB, although if they
surrended ay Vicksburg that's not so surprising (although it
wouldn't be impossible).
I don't have an OOB for Vicksburg, that'd be the first place I'd
check if I did. Once you know what brigade/division they were
assigned to, start looking for histories of that unit. Histories
of batteries are rare but histories of infantry regiments usually
mention the attached artillery. Also look for biographers of any
commanders they may have had, particularly brigade or division
commanders. The artillery usually gets mentioned at that point
also.

Landis's Missouri Battery-- Capt. John C. Landis
With two 12-pounder howitzers and two 24-pounder howitzers
is on the Pea Ridge/Elkhorn Tavern OOB (Order of Battle) attached
to Price's Division of Confederate troops-- it was not attached to the
Missouri State Guard, so it had presumably transferred from the Guard
to the CS Army by that time.
(from Shea & Hess, Pea Ridge: Civil War Campaign in the West).

>Also can't find them on the Shiloh OOB which is a little more odd.

Van Dorn's Army of the West did not start across the Mississippi
until 6 Apr 1862, too late to help out at Shiloh. The Batty. presumably
would have taken part under Price in the battles of Iuka and Corinth, MS
in the fall of 1862.

That's odd. When we (Landis battery) went to Wilson's Creek for the
nat. re-enactment a few years ago the guy in charge of the battle was
thrilled that we were there because, he said, our unit fought at the original
battle.

I'll have to lookit up again, but I saw in a volume of the "..Records
of the War of the Rebellion" or however it goes , that Landis battery
surrenderd 24 8 lb brass guns and assorted other equip at Vickberg.
Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, my alma mater, has a set of the
records.

I'll keep looking, through the ten feet of shelving that the Records takes up.
Have to find SOMETHING.

Diden't Price fight at the battle of Westport near KC. I have a
pamphlet from the Westport historical soc. celebrating an anniversary of the
battle which, I think mentions Landis btry under Price's command. The book
also has a lot of units which are re-enacted here in the KC area. Not
suprisingly.

The Battle of Westport, MO, was fought 23 Oct 1864. It was part of
Price's raid which had started out from Arkansas on 28 Aug 1864.
After Westport, Price retreated along the Kansas-Missouri border,
suffered another defeat at Mine Creek on the Marais des Cygnes River
on 25 Oct 1864. And limped back to Texas via the Indian Territory by
the end of Nov. 1864.

It is possible that Landis' men returned to the Trans-Mississippi
after being paroled at Vicksburg (though the Federals would have kept
their guns, I presume); however, it is much more likely that they
remained in the Cis-Mississippi and joined the Army of Tennessee for
the Atlanta campaign.

From "Confederate Military History", Vol. IX, "Missouri", by Col. John C.
Moore, Landis' battery and the unorganized battalions formed the Second
Missouri brigade, under B-Gen. Slack, at Pea Ridge. After the death of
Slack, they were merged into the First brigade, under Brig. Gen. Henry
Little. All under Price, as mentioned above.

Landis' battery was formed with Capt. J. C. Landis, 1st Lt. J. M. Langan,
2nd Lt. W. W. Weller, and 3rd Lt. A. Harris. (Was 3rd Lieutenant a rank in
the CSA, or is this just a list of 3 equal lieutenants??)
