CSA reverencers are not important in civil-war memory issues. All the
great cultural institutions in the US are located in regions that take
an adversarial stance toward CSA reverencers.

The really important aspect of civil-war memory is the NORTHERN aspect,
or if you prefer, the pro-Union aspect. That was the victorious
side. All of the prestigious cultural institutions are located in
"pro-union" territory, and to some extent view CSA-reverencers as alien.

I myself am not a CSA reverencer. But I don't waste time studying
CSA-reverencers. Instead, I study Union-reverencers, the victors.

(Some time ago, in an argument with Ray O'Hara, who declared that
CSA-reverence had the upper hand in ACW studies, I asked some easy
questions. Is there any evidence of this? What about Lincoln studies?
Do they count for or against CSA reverence?)

Most of the marble-rebel monuments I have seen are labelled "Our
Confederate Dead" owtte. AFAIK most of the rebels killed in the war were
buried in anonymous mass graves. There was no US government program to
mark their graves. It isn't absolutely crazy that some memorial should
have been placed. They were killed. Somebody loved them. And their
graves were mostly unmarked. (AFAIK)

My opinion is that even these monuments should be located in cemeteries,
and other locations outside a sovereign context. But I probably would
not require the movement from the courthouse square of such a one, if it
were already there.

I doubt that anybody is in doubt who lost.

Nor I. I have no reverence for the old Confederacy. I lost one
G-G-Grandfather in the war due to them. And another two sets of
G-G-Grandparents suffered a lot because of the war and reconstruction.

However -- I do reverence the Old South. And the New South. Which
was better for the average Southerner ? The old or the new ?

As they say -- accurately -- history is written by the winners. Much
is the pity.

I do wonder about a question you posed in another thread.
"Why did the Northerners love the Union?"

I can't figure that out.

Why do you love the Union today? Or do you?

If someone tried to take the South from the US today, I'm sure we'd
fight to keep it, just as they did then.

How about Arlington National Cemetery? Aren't there CSA dead buried there? The headstones are shaped differently than the Union markers.

What I said was, AFAIK most of the rebels killed in battle were buried
anonymously. I think if you check out the the various so-called
confederate cemeteries, you'll find that statement holds up. But if in
fact, most of the rebel battle-dead lie in marked graves, I'll be happy
to be corrected.

I don't know how many rebel-battle-dead lie in Arlington. ISTR that the
interment of rebels in Arlington was authorized decades after the war.

Most of the rebels killed in the war were buried in anonymous
graves, AFAIK.

Let me give a local example. AFAIk most of the rebels from Emanuel
County, Georgia, killed in battle were killed hundreds of miles away in
Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, north Georgia and Tennessee. It's
likely that few of their graves were marked at the time on the battle
site, and I don't know of any whose bodies were retured home.

This is different from Confederates who survived the war, and whose
graves included information about their CSA service. From visiting
local cemeteries in connection with family concerns I have noticed that
the SCV have been active in the past few years in placing markers
denoting Confederate service of individuals.

So, I still believe that most of the rebel battle-dead were buried in
unmarked graves near the battlefield. I thought this was common
knowledge to those interested in Civil War history. I'm surprised to
see it challenged, but if I'm wrong about this, then I'll be happy to be
corrected.

Here are some of them. I have more, but they're in the attic or in
another place. I also have lots of readers and exercise books, some
going back to the early 70s, when I had Latin rammed down my throat at
school. I have never thrown away or sold a dictionary.

1) Dictionnaire latin-francais. Used for school assignments.
Flammarion. Paperback.

2) Nuovo vocabolario della lingua latina. Used for historical works.
Mondadori. Paperback.

3) Oxford Latin Dictionary. A hefty tome and my main resource over the
years. Hardcover.

4) The Latin Sexual Vocabulary. A real humdinger! Adams, J.N. Johns
Hopkins University Press. Paperback.

5) Le Latin en 40 lecons. This one, an exercise book, is at hand for
some reason. Presses Pocket. Paperback.

6) 501 Latin Verbs. Very handy. Barrons. Paperback.

Happy now?

Good of you to provide some of this information, M & M.

But you need to clear up this question about your background. Where in
Europe were you born (what country), and what is the ethnic minority
in that country that you were a member of?

What is your mother tongue?

Did you move to Canada with your parents?

Did you grow up in Quebec or in a francophone community in a different
province?

No need for you to be reticent.

Is being Catholic the only reason to go to a Jesuit school, Perfesser?
I don' t believe in their bogus ideology, but some of them were tough
guys, athletically and intellectually. Rigorous, well-trained,
talented, adamant and fierce in both offense and defense. One was
rumoured to have been a soldier and that was easy to believe. He was

Parents Christians, non-observant, but neither Catholic or Protestant.

Paisley promotes a form of Biblical literalism and Anti-Catholicism,
which he describes as "Bible Protestantism". The website of Paisley's
public relations arm, the European Institute of Protestant Studies,
describes the institute's purpose as to "expound the Bible, expose the
Papacy, and to promote, defend and maintain Bible Protestantism in
Europe and further afield." Paisley's website describes a number of
doctrinal areas in which he believes that the "Roman church" (which he
termed Popery) has deviated from the Bible and thus from true
Christianity.

In 1988, when Pope John Paul II delivered a speech to the European
Parliament, Paisley shouted "I denounce you as the Antichrist!" and
held up a red poster reading "Pope John Paul II ANTICHRIST" in black
letters. John Paul continued with his address after Paisley was
ejected from the hemicycle by fellow MEPs. Some reports claimed that
other MEPs, including Otto von Habsburg, assisted in expelling him
from the chamber, and that Paisley was booed and struck by other MEPs,
who also hurled objects at him, leading to his hospitalisation.

Paisley continued to denounce the Catholic Church and the Pope after
the incident. In a television interview for The Unquiet Man, a 2001
documentary on Paisley's life, he expressed his pride at being "the
only person to have the courage to denounce the Pope".

After the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005, Paisley expressed
sympathy for Catholics stating "We can understand how Roman Catholics
feel at the death of the Pope and we would want in no way to interfere
with their expression of sorrow and grief at this time." This was in
contrast to Paisley's reaction to the death of Pope John XXIII in June
1963, when Paisley organised protests against the lowering of flags in
public buildings after the death of the Pope.

He has claimed in an article that the seat no. 666 in the European
Parliament is reserved for the Antichrist.

He and his organisation have publicly spoken out against what he views
to be blasphemy in popular culture, including criticism of the stage
productions Jesus Christ Superstar and Jerry Springer: The Opera, as
well as being strongly pro-life.

Although at political odds with the Republic of Ireland, he has some
religious followers in two counties (County Donegal and County
Monaghan). It was specifically in his religious capacity that he first
agreed to meet the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern. Paisley revised this
stance in September 2004, when he agreed to meet Ahern in his
political capacity as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party.

Known for a sense of humour, at an early meeting with Ahern at the
Irish embassy in London, Paisley requested breakfast and asked for
boiled eggs; when Ahern asked him why he had wanted boiled eggs,
Paisley quipped "it would be hard for you to poison them".

No Ulsterman considers himself to be Irish.

You don't really know what you are talking about in the context of US
history.

Are you talking about Ulser today?

Do you mean that century Ulstermen were never called Irish and never
called themselves Irish?

Careful now. LOL.

I answered your question, White Boy. No Ulsterman today says "I'm not
"OIRISH" but my ancestors 200 years ago were". They are pretty fucking
adamant about being British - first, last and always. I denounce Ian
Paisley as the anti-Christ!

So now you're living in today. Heading back to the 1800's soon?
