During the course of land operations in Europe in pursuit of military victory
over Nazi Germany the Supreme Commander, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, was
challenged not only to achieve victory but also to maintain a constantly fragile
balance between the Allied forces of France, England, France and the United
States. English determination under Field Marshall Bernard Law Montgomery
persistently complicated Allied operations by conceiving battles intended to
force his promotion to "Ground Commander In Chief", and England's desire under
Winston Churchill to achieve colonial control over many nations rescued from
Nazi Germany. Operation Veritable/Grenade was one such Operation that lost its
military value as American units moved closer toward crossing the Rhine River.
One of the greatest challenges under American commanders was to prevent or
minimize American and Allied losses under Operations such as this demanded by
British Commanders that required American support. Awarded for In-theatre
