I finally had road trip with my NB and it was fantastic.
I love my car!!!
However, I figured out that the rpm is over 4000 when I drive over 80
mph.
A friend of mine told me that his car (different manufacture) has 3000
rpm when he drives over 80 mph.
I was wondering, if it is normal or too high rpm for my car.
Would anyone who has New Beetle (1998-2000) answer my question?
-80mph with 4000 rpm. Is it okay??????
Does your NB have the same rpm when you drive over 80 mph?

It零 normal, New Beetles are geared higher then most cars. You don靖
have to down sift to accelerate as much, don靖 the engine run higher
when cruising.

We (my wife actually) have an 99 NB with an automatic trans and it too runs
that kind of RPMs. It gives good power on the highway, but like you, I am
concerned about high RPM that equates to high engine wear over the years.
Most autos these days seem to run very little RPM which helps increase
engine life (and fuel mileage) and the bigger the engine, the lower the RPM.
Good concept, so I wonder about the V-Dubs. I guess the V-Dub engineers
thought power was more important than engine life. But then maybe it's not
as bad as we think.

Evidently, one of the running changes for the GLX version of the New Beetle
will be the addition of a 6-speed transmission. This should give you an
"overdrive" gear to bring the RPM's down at higher speeds.

Thank you for the replies, you guys...
I have to admit that driving 80 MPH is not legal anywhere in my State.
But if you really want to enjoy driving, you need to speed up, right?
Whenever I see Porsche, I feel sorry for them. (They really don't have
chance to enjoy their car in the city.)
Anyway, it's good to know that my car is okay. :)
Thanks!

>I'm wondering if my '99 Jetta has the same engine as the '98-'99 Beetle.
All three engines available in the NB are available in the Jetta. The
Jetta also a the VR6 which is not available in the Jetta.
Perhaps if every single 98 NB did that as well, they probably should have
fixed it. However, since most 98 NB's do not burn a quart of oil every 1,000
miles, there's not much VW can do other than try to fix YOUR car.

Except for, different displacements, different compression ratios,
different vale trains, different cylinder heads, oh and the Turbo thing.
I guess that other then that those five major design differences there
exactly the same.
Mine is 4-speed 2000 NB GLS. It's not a Turbo.
It goes 60mph at over 3000 rmp and 80 mph at over 4000 rmp...
It seems that not only my car but also other NBs have the same problem.
My car is only 6 months old. I should ask to the dealership.

You must have a modified transition or a bad tachometer.
