Getting a green card is the first step in the US naturalization(https://www.uscitizenship.info/us-citizenship/U-S-Citizenship-application-Form-N-400.jsp)process. Apart from the fact, that it bestows the right to work and stay legally in the US, it is the most important requirement to become a US citizen.
Greencard lottery is one way of getting permanent resident status in the US. DV lottery 2014 has just started and it will be on till Nov,3. Read the DV lottery instructions before you apply.
