Hi All,

I got my conditional GC in 8/02. It is going to expire in a few months, i.e.
8/04. If I remember correctly the officer told me that I will have to apply
for the permanent GC about 3 months before my conditional GC expires. Does
my memory serve me right and if not when do I have to apply for it? Also
what documents, if any, will I have to provide this time?

Finally, I plan to travel just around the time when my conditional GC
expires. I know it's probably not the best thing to do but I am kind of
stuck with that travel date. What do I have to keep in mind? What if I do
not get the permanent GC before my conditional GC expires?

Regards,

Rob

File form I-751 and evidence as suggested in the instructions no earlier
than 90 days before the green card expires. The fee is $145, last time I
checked.
Note: 90 days, NOT 3 months. Sometimes they can be pedantic about such
things.

A week or 2 after filing, you should get a notice that extends your
green card by a year. If your green card expires during or before you
travels, the letter "should" be enough to convince the carrier in the
foreign country to fly you back. You could also get an I-551 stamp in
your passport to be extra sure. Note: when doing this, do not show them
boththe stamp and expired card, it may just confuse them. It took my
wife 6 months to get I-751 approved. After approval, you will be
notified to go to your local office to get the 10 year green card
processing started.
