SNK Stop Neo Geo Support

SNK has decided to stop offering maintenance and repairs for the Neo
Geo home hardware, accessories and game cartridges as well as Neo Geo
CD, Neo Geo CDZ and the Neo Geo Pocket. SNK left the console business
by the year 2000, but continued to support its hardware. Starting
August 31st, it won't. The reason? Getting parts has become
increasingly difficult. Sega, likewise, announced earlier this year
that it would no longer service its consoles starting this fall. It's
the end of an era. Officially.

More than 10 years after the Neo-Geo has gone out of production, SNK
Playmore has announced that starting from August 31st, they will no
longer be offering maintenance and repair support for the Neo-Geo home
console, its accessories, and its game carts. This includes support
for memory cards, the Neo-geo CD, Neo-geo CDZ, and the Neo-geo Pocket.
The reason for ending support is due to the difficulty in getting
spare parts for these old hardware in this current age and time. Users
that wish to have their products repaired before they end their
product support can use the form that is available on their website.

2D gaming mourns as Neo-Geo passes on

By Frank Caron

If there was any one platform that I had an unabashed, biased love
for, it would most certainly be the Neo-Geo. SNK Playmore's 2D wonder-
machine was easily my favorite console of all time, as it was home to
a variety of my all-time favorite games: Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown,
Fatal Fury and many more. It was an expensive beast, but it pumped out
some of the best 2D visuals and produced some of the best 2D gameplay
the world has ever known.

It's been quite a while since I sat down and played on an actual Neo-
Geo machine; I'd been hoping to pick up a secondhand one recently, but
now it seems that my chances of finding one for a decent price just
got more remote. SNK Playmore has announced that, due to the
difficulty in acquiring and servicing some of the decade-old parts,
repair and maintenance will no longer be offered on the unit or any
peripherals, including games. The company offered condolences and one
last chance for users to send in their old units on its Japanese web
site.

Thankfully, Neo-Geo fans aren't totally out of luck. We previously
heard word that the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console will be picking up
titles, and for those who own the old roms and discs, emulators are
always available. Still, it's sad to see the old black beauty go;
let's wave a last goodbye to the era of 2D supremacy.

SNK Playmore Discontinues Neo-Geo Support

Andy Chalk posted on 6 Jun 2007, 03:21 PMSNK Playmore has announced
that as of August 31, 2007, they will no longer be offering
maintenance and repair support for the Neo-Geo console.

Although it has been more than 10 years since the console went out of
production, the company has kept up support for the system over the
years, at least in part due to the small but die-hard core of fans
that has grown up around it. The announcement includes all aspects of
the system, including memory cards, the Neo-Geo CD, Neo-Geo CDZ, and
the Neo-Geo Pocket. SNK Playmore has said that support is being
discontinued due to the difficulty of finding replacement parts for
such an old machine.

The company is offering Neo-Geo owners a final opportunity to have
their units serviced via a form on its website, which unfortunately
appears to be entirely in Japanese.

Fortunately for fans of the system, the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console
is picking up Neo-Geo titles, and emulators are available for gamers
who own Neo-Geo roms and discs.

That's quite a long time of support. That would have been like the old
atari systems being supported until 2006, comparatively, or the Jag
being supported until 2014.

Okay, who's supplying support for the Jag then? Seen a few places still
selling that brand new and all.

Oh, hell yes. Yay, now I can try out NeoGeo without hunting down the
hardware!

ObClassic: How have the Wii owners in the group managed to merge their
VC games with their classic collection? Have you been less tempted to
go thrifting? Has the VC opened your eyes to consoles you never had a
chance to play before (and tempted you to buy the original)? Is it a
reasonable substitute for the real deal? And... are you willing to buy
on the VC a game that you already own?

Me, I've really gotten into TG-16 now that I own a Wii. I don't plan to
ever get a real TG-16, though I'm open to the possibility. I don't
download any games that I already own in cartridge form, though if the VC
introduces me to a game I like, I might later buy it on cart. Hey, you
never know... if I fill up that 2GB card, I might need to find ways to
make space.

Ebuyer has 16 left from a batch of a few hundred etc. I think they found
some old stock in some warehouse. Mind you, it's £85 to buy one of them.
Comes with a game anyways. :)

I suppose this will make them all sell out now but yeah, want a brand new
Jaguar, they're there. :)

that clinches it..

The PS3 comes with FREE online,
The PS3 plays Blu-Ray RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX
The PS3 has 60 GB hard drive, FREE downloadable demos & games

PS3 totally wins. More bang for your buck. Plus it has the
"controversial" Resistance fall of man game. Ps3 has the most going
for it.

No idea what planet you've been on for the last 12 months, but the PS3 (I
own one) is still waiting for a 'must have' game. I'm quite annoyed that I
have no decent games to play on, i'm quite annoyed Sony forced Blu-Ray down
my throat and made me pay extra for it. I'm quite annoyed their 'free'
online service absolutely blows and isn't even comparable to the 360
service.

What still confuses me are the controllers - can't believe they went with
an 11 year old design still. I disagree this console is anything but a
pretty box gathering dust on my entertainment deck. Shame really.
