Recently, my Panasonic NV-HD600 VCR faulted with an F-03 (or was it 04?)
fault. The tape was stuck in the transport. On powering up, the machine
wiggles its load motor, and spins up the heads as I've heard it do
hundreds of times, but then after a couple of seconds it gives in, and
displays this fault code.
Several years ago, I used to fix VCRs and other more varied pro-audio
gear, like DATs. Back then, 4-5 screws and the top cover was off, another
4 or so and the mech was out of the chassis. I took a guess that it was
probably a broken capstan to reel drive belt, and ordered one of those, a
pinch roller and a K mech manual. I took the cover off, and then could
NOT remove the mech from the chassis. It seems one crucial screw, front
left of the mech, is obscured by the tape, which is still loaded. I can't
access the load motor to manually unload the tape to get at that screw, to
get the mech out, to access the load motor, ... Am I missing something
here, or do I have a chicken and egg situation? How should I proceed?
The mech manual isn't actually that useful. The one I've been sent is
titled "Training Manual, K mechanism chassis" order no VRD9302D101. It
assumes as a starting point that you've already got the mech out of the
chassis.
I've since searched the archives a bit, and discovered that the fault is
most likely a split plastic drive gear or broken clutch or similar on the
shaft of the load motor. This explains why when I manually tried to apply
power to the load motor, things still didn't work.
I'd appreciate some help. I really don't want to be beaten now. If you
could, please reply to me as well as to the group.
Many thanks,
Geoff.

You have to break out the cassette before you can handle this screw :-(
This is the most UNfriendly mechanism ever build!
I nowadays refuses to repair this mechanism. I have several repaired of
these and tell the customer that they might lose the tape.
With a special "rebuild" screwdriver sometimes you can move the loading
gear. Sometimes the tape is so stuck, that you can't move the gear. Then you
have to break the cassette.
Good luck, I hope this is your own VCR and it will help to move the loading
gear.

Whatever you do, don't force the tape out. There is a very simple method to
remove the tape - recommended by Panasonic, and that is to undo the small
cassette housing screw (top right corner ) of the cassette housing. You can
then lift the cassette housing enough to disengage the drive gear from the
mechanism and then you can manually pop the tape out without damaging the
cassette housing. The screws securing the mechanical chassis are then easily
removed. You will probably find that the loading motor has gone lazy and
will need to be replaced. This is the most common of faults on the K
mechanism. (I replace on average at least 2 motors on these Panasonic decks
a month) If you know the disassembly / re-assembly procedure, they are in
fact very simple and easy to work on.

Richard
