I would like to know how to program it to work with my GE TV. Since I have
no manual for the VCR this remote came from, I have no idea how to even
attempt it. I thought it might be in some way similar to the U448 remote,
but programming that one requires holding the SP/EP button, which the older
remote does not have.
And speaking of which, is there a way to set the record speed from the
remote? It seems like an absurd thing to leave out, but if there is some
hidden key combination for it, I have no way of knowing.
Here is the remote in question:
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
That's the trouble with using the remote from another model. The record
speed may well have been an on-screen function, as it is on my HS-U795.
It is accessable with the remote even though there is no button for it.
A "video" button under the remote cover is depressed a number of times
until the tape speed select screen is showing.
As far as programming the remote, it also varies with the remote. On my
HS-U795 remote, to program for a GE TV: TV must be OFF; press "TV" on
remote; open cover, and while holding in "PIP" button, press "CANCEL"
button; press "POWER" on remote to verify it turns on TV. Other possible
buttons if "CANCEL" does not work are: 0, 1-9, audio, enter, and VCR/TV.
Good luck.
BTW, both the remote and the manual for the HS-U448 are available at:

Thanks for the reply and the link. I already have two U448 remotes and manuals, but
these remotes cannot transmit VCR-B signals, so I cannot remotely control both machines
at the same time. That's why I bought this new remote.
It never even occurred to me to check for a speed button, as I have never seen a remote
without one. Fortunately the VCR actually has a speed button on it, so I can live
without it on the remote.
This remote doesn't have a PIP button, but this gives me some concept of something to
work from.
Thanks again for your help.

What buttons are under the lid of that remote? The link you gave only
showed a picture with the lid closed.

Buttons under the useless lid:
Off-T/OTR, VCR-A, VCR-B, Input, Cancel, Enter, 0-9
So far I haven't been able to figure anything out.

Good luck. It's either continue with trial and error, or find a
manual for that remote or a VCR that uses that remote.
What VCRs use that remote (again.)

HS-U57 / HS-U67.
The lower half of it is physically identical to the remote used by the U770 /
U650, except that that one says "VCR Plus+" above the Quick Program button. I
don't know what it looks like beneath the lid, or if the programming would be
different.

This is an ebay auction for a U57. He has a manual. Perhaps you can
convince him to give you the remote programming details?

Read the whole thread, dude. He already has the original remotes.
Entering a thread after it has ended is not too bright.
Speaking of not to bright, YOU reread the thread, Dud.
He has the remote for a HS-U57/67. He's using it to control
a pair of HS-U448s. He does not have the original remote, no speed button.
He can get the original remote, WITH speed button, for $15 at the site I
posted . And it will probably come with a code sheet telling him how to
program it to control a GE TV.
And who died and made you in charge of ending a thread Dud?

So, enjoy the taste of the shoe leather as you read the *whole* thread.

The thread ended when the OP dropped out.
Now crawl back into your hole.

Yet? It's from January 22. Read it at:

Yours is the 14th. Until you revived it, the thread had been
dead since January 26.
