Not that this will make a difference in my decision to switch, was just
wondering... Does the TiVo Desktop Plus software ($24.95 instead of free)
support folders in regards to how I have media arranged, specifically if I
have a multi-level nested file structure (some 4 folders deep) will it show
that way on the TiVo when I browse to it?
If so, then I may cough up the $$$ for it.
If not, any suggestions for software that would allow it? Or is the
limitation on the appliance end and no software will allow multi-level
nesting of folders?
Additional question: I currently use a VM running TVersity to stream my
above mentioned media collection to my XBox and PS3 (those do show the
folder structure intact). Any software I should look into to replace
TVersity that would stream to my other media devices as well as my soon to
be new TiVos?
Going to get one of the HD capable units with an M-Card for me. The kids
will use a single-tuner S2 for their recordings.
Thanks
I do NOT have the Plus software, and the folders on my PC are nested
on the Tivo just fine. At least my photos and music are. Now it does
NOT display the nested structure like explorer can. But when you open
a folder, you see the folders directly beneath it.

Tivo recordings retain the same kindof folder structure that they do
when they're on locally-attached drives, save that they're in ANOTHER
folder named for your computer name. Non-tivo video files that you add
to the TiVo Recordings folder are shown flat in that PC-named folder in
the Now Playing list, regardless of what the folder structure is on the
PC's disk. I don't know if there's a way to gimick the file meta info to
make them appear in subfolders to the TiVo.

not sure what you mean, if the tivo is/will be on a wireless network at your
home, the stuff is aleady stored in folders but displayed as not by the now
playing list (doesn't show folder structure in now playing list)...
heres a cool article (but with a really BAD name, no "hacking" involved,
actually just ACCESSING the xml server already in most tivos, and free)
Hacking the XML in Your TiVo

sorry, forget to paste this last thing from the multipage article... that
relates to directory listings
The ability to see directory listings and to retrieve JPEG and MP3 files
from one home network machine to another is not in itself exciting.
Thanks for the information folks. Still haven't decided which software
package to use as my bridge to TiVos, but I have some ideas to look into.
Too bad the TiVo won't retain the full/nested file/folder structure like I
hoped, but I already have various media extenders at all the TVs that matter
already, so no big loss. Single shot viewings that I would prefer to use
the TiVo interface for I will just keep in a single folder to be shared by
the software and keep it uncluttered.
FYI... TiVo is out of stock on new TiVO HD units (they do have the TiVo
HD-XL in stock) but they did give me a remanufactured unit with the same
warranty for $99 (initially they offered it for $199 until I pointed out
that being an existing TiVo subscriber the web site was offering me a new
one for $150). I already have a single-tuner Series2 for the kids that has
lifetime service already on it.
