I know back in the days where this was thought of as cheating someone
out of money but now that these machines are reaching "paper weight"
status, has anyone come up with a hack that makes the manual record
function easier to use?

There is still a lot of stuff out there that is not in HD. GIGO

In case you mean real MANUAL (press record, wait awhile, press stop), I
think it works better if you DON'T have a guide (although you'll need
the lineup if you want to record from the tuner).

BTW, I tried it once on a 2020 and found it still possible to do a
manual record from line 1 without any lineup settings.

A lot of what I want to watch is older shows.

WiRNS allows more control over multiple Replays.

Replay allows digital transfers to DVA or WiRNS, without dealing with
corporate paranoia (misleadingly called "protection").

BTW, do you know that while the Replay isn't HD, it DOES handle widescreen.

I have no problem with a blank lineup screen (what I get since the
Zap2it guide went away) but just getting to the record menu is more
cumbersome than it needs to be and it certainly could use an instant
record button like the VCRs used to have (press record and it starts
recording whatever you are watching for a half hour, increasing the
stop time with each press)
Right now I am only using this to digitize programs I have on my Dish
DVR so I can store them in a useful manner.
I may try to find a digital to NTSC converter that the replay can talk
to so I can use this on OTA broadcasts, most are SD anyway (on the sub
channels).

At a certain point I guess I will end up with a PC solution but I
still like the replay.

BTW I do have the local channel antenna module in the Dish machine but
it really sucks. I can see all of the local stations just fine with
rabbit ears on my TV but the Dish tuner pixelates and drops out with a
deep fringe antenna and an antenna amp. They don't want you to look at
OTA.

I have wished that "record" button would actually do that, rather than
presenting a menu. I'd have put in a button that starts recording NOW,
and never does anything else. Useful when you'd line to record something
coming on in less than a second.

I used to have a VCR with a button like that (I think it was called
"quick record"), one press for each half hour. Of course with that,
you'd still have to make sure there's a blank tape in.

I have had an RCA unit that would work. However, some people have told
me that the more recent versions don't work (sorry I don't still have
that and can't remember the model number or Replay IR code).

Does Dish have your local channels on satellite?

BTW, I suppose you know an antenna amp won't help unless there is a good
signal at its input.

I have had about a dozen VCRs over the years. I had a Sony SL7200
Betamax in 75, one of the first in the DC area.
After about 80, most had the instant record feature and most of them
were very easy to program.

I just have the "guvmint" free box. a Magnavox machine I think.

Only the primary channels, not the sub channels.

The raw signal was fine straight to the TV but if I want to record
them I wanted to use the DVR and that depends on the channel module
that just sucks.
I have upgraded the antenna twice and it works fairly well but I still
get dropouts. Right now the antenna is a deep fringe that should work
100 miles away and I am more like 25.
