The repair person said that the unit was manufactured in 1994 and he's
trying to set me up with a new combo DVD/ LD player, the DVL 91, of which I
already own for my second theater.
In any event, I told him that it was my opinion that the DVL 91 was not in
the same league as the CLD 97. He claims the DVL 91 has a much better
transport and overall is a better product given the advances in technology.
he kept going back to the fact that the unit is 8 years old and used the
words "do you really want to resurrect the unit".
Bottom line is I babied this thing and even went out and paid extra to mod
it so it would do Dolby Digital. Everywhere I have looked, researched leads
me to believe that the CLD 97 is indeed a much better player.
The repair is for a new spindle and transport and will cost $ 500. Is it
worth it ?
Any opinions on whether or not I should repair it or if I am on the money to
suggest that the CLD 97 is a much better player then the DVL 91.
Thanks in advance

It's worth it. The 97 is a better LD player than the DVL-91. I
have yet to see the combo player that can even equal, let alone
better, the performance of the best standalone Elite LD players.
$500 is pricey but reasonable for a new spindle and transport;
although I haven't priced them lately, I'd bet that you won't
find another 97 for much less than $700-800, and then you're
taking a chance on it if its history is unknown. If it was my 97,
and I'd taken good care of it, I'd pay the $500 and not look
back. Be glad that you can still get replacement parts for it and
find someone to work on it - such resources will continue to get
scarcer as time passes.

Fix the 97 and stay away from the combi players.

I would get another estimate. I find it hard to believe the spindle motor and
pickup both went out. I believe that shop wants to swap it all out and not have
to really debug it.
What was the problem?

A regular on this newsgroup, Kurtis Bahr, at kb...@erols.com is a pro
at fixing these players! I've shipped a few to him and he's very
proficient at repairing and tweaking players. If I were you I'd email
him and maybe he can do the same job for a better price. He stands by
his work and has repaired players for many others in this ng.

Assuming that the diagnosis and treatment are correct, ask yourself
this question: Would I buy this unit, repaired, for the cost of the
repair?
In other words, if you were in the market for a working, well cared
for, repaired CLD-97 with AC-3 out, would you pay $500 for one?
I would.
