Little Mermaid contains controversial artwork that was done out of spite by a
couple of disgruntled artists. Can someone tell me where this artwork appears
in the original laserdisc? Also, does this artwork appear in the newest
laserdisc release or has it been touched up or excised? Thank you in advance.

The big yellow dildo was excised after the initial release. I don't have
the original CLV but I did borrow it from someone, and I don't recall
seeing that thing on there. (I do still remember going into video stores
and looking at the VHS box and giggling like an idiot when the original
one was released. It was pretty graphic, for a Disney animation.)

This was all a lie - Doesn't anyone remember when this was covered? I'm going
to try and find a source to put these dumb rumours to rest - just like the
"ghost" in THREE MEN AND A BABY - it was just a kid that snuck on the set!
GEESH! They DID alter the artwork - but NO ONE was disgruntled - it's amazing
how much people WANT to believe something - Disney changed it because of the
bad publicity - like with the new ROGER RABBIT, ALADDIN on video, and other
things.

First of all, the cover was painted by one artist. And he isn't
disgruntled, and he still works at Disney. Second, the painting
with the phallus only appeared on the first tape copies, not the
LD.

Aside from the phallus hidden in the cover art, leave us
not forget the final scene, in which the prince and the
little mermaid are married. The minister "pops a woody"
during the ceremony!!! It's clearly visible on the original
cassettes and the original laserdisc.
I'm sure it will be missing from the new laserdisc.
Anyone who wants to pursue this matter should go rent the
recently reissued VHS editon of this film. If the "woody"
has been removed from the new VHS version, it will surely
be missing from the letterboxed laserdisc as well.

It's his knee, silly boy. Saw it on 60 minutes.

If you want, I could scan that artwork and post it. It is quite
funny.

ALso there's the issue of the minister's erection. Will that be in
the new LD? It was in the recent theatrical release.

Are you saying it's not been placed there intentionally? Looks like a
giant golden penis pointing straight up to the sky! I'll scan and
post it later for all to decide for themselves.

It was in the theatrical prints last fall.

Then he has a very small knee.

Yes, this was debunked on 60 Minutes this past season, on an episode that was
recently rerun (last week?). It's clearly the minister's knee, and the whole
thing makes you wonder what kind of dirty minds some people have when it comes
to animation!

Next thing, you'll be saying that the dust in the starry sky of THE LION KING

Whatever - you people see what you want to see - I HAVE to find the book that
went over all these RUMOURS and set them to rest -- this and the "three Men and
a Baby" ghost were in the book and the explanations were revealed --- there WAS
no ghost - just a boy that walked onto the set - and there is not a dick on the
cover of LITTLE MERMAID - if you WANT to see one of the towers as one, you can
- but it was not intentional - it was altered because people kept making a big
deal about it - Just like Disney altered the opening lyrics of Aladdin on video
because some Arabs complained - and just like they'll keep altering thigns as
long as people make a fuss. I guess the whole LITTLE MERMAID tower thing just
goes to show how dirty people's minds are.

You can't see how some would find it hard to believe that a person would
draw that tower, and not realize what it looks like? Considering they
type of things that flow out of Donald Duck's mouth, I have my doubts
about the complete purity of the Disney creators' intentions.

I agree that some people tend to see too much in many areas in Disney
films..BUT...

There really isn't much question in my mind about the original cover art
for the Little Mermaid. I can't imagine it not being plain to anyone who
has seen it. It's not a case of 'projecting'. (no pun intended, though a
hundred puns have come to mind).

I've seen the evidence and have come to my own conclusions. I agree these
things are more often useful as Rorschach tests than subliminal messages,
In this category I would include sex in the dirt, the aroused apostle, and
Aladdin's improper suggestion. The "ghost boy" is obviously a standee of Ted
Danson. However-on the other hand is the phallic tower. I think anybody who's
seen a penis would be hard-pressed to deny the resemblance.

Regarding the ghost in Three Men And A Baby-
The ghost is not a boy that wandered onto a set, but a cardboard stand up of
Ted Danson that had been made to promote the film "A Fine Mess". Someone
brought it in as a joke and it ended up in camera view and was called a ghost.
At least this is what the National Enquirer told me after they did an
exhaustive investigative report on the ghost.

It wasn't even a stand up from "A Fine Mess." Anyone who can freeze frame
their VCR can see what it is. (although I got a laugh when EW or Premiere
wrote a blurb about how it was not a ghost, then printed a letter from a
reader letting them know how foolish THEY were). It is a cardboard stand
up that is seen earlier in the movie - the one with Ted Dansen tipping a top
hat. That's all it is. How this ended up being debated as much as it was
is beyond me.

LOL, y'all! As the last poster mentioned, that would indeed
be a very small knee. But let's pretend that that is what
Disney intended. What is the implication? Is the minister
attempting to knee the Prince in the groin, so that the young
buck cannot ccnsumate his wedding night? Is the minister trying
to fix things so that he will make even more money off the royal
couple, when the bride decides to annull the marriage because the
Prince is not able to perform his husbandly duties? Assuming that
the extending member is the minister's knee, what is the
implication?

I'd love to continue discussing this thread, but I've got to go
and play the "Mr. Ed" theme song backwards before I retire for
the night.
