Hi there!

I am usually only buying LDs which are letterboxed. However, rather
old movies have an aspect-ratio which is (allmost) identical to the
standard TV one (4:3). Unfortunately, I don't know, which movies
were made in that size.

Can someone please post (or mail to me) a list of movies that have
an original aspect-ratio of 4:3?

Thanks in advance.

Probably hundreds of thousands, if not in the millions.

More seriously....if I remember correctly most movies made prior
1951..or 52 (before the modern widescreen techniques became available)
were shot with this academy ratio. (Some movies also after that....but those
ones you have to find out yourself).

_Old_ movies, I don'tknow about. _New_ "Academy" ratio movies, yes.
_Matinee_ comes to mind, as does at least one Japanese animation film,
the name of which escapes me right now. But I've seen this, yes.

This could be a rather long list!

Lots of 'em. However, what I want to know is have there been ANY laser

discs of old movies in the CORRECT ratio, i.e. with a slight letterboxing?

I've seen numerous old movies which while in Academy ration, and while my
TV has minimal overscan, there is still very obvious cropping. Many older
movies seemed to use ALL of the available space, and so text and the like
is cut off. Presenting the movie letterboxed would probably go unnoticed
by people who don't like it due to most TV's overscanning, but would make
the film look SO much better, even for them (they'd still see more of the
width). So much for so little -- I just can't understand why it's not
done.

Also, movies made prior to the Academy Standard are in 1.17:1 (if I remember
correctly). This is movies made before "the end of the 1920s" (sorry can't
remember exact year; might be between 1928 and 1932 (?)), anyway it will
include most silent movies.
