Just bought a secondhand LD player, however I believe it must have been
damaged in transit.

The player in question is a Pioneer CLD515 and when I press the "tray open"
buttons (on either the CD or LD buttons) nothing happens, although the
display flashes up "E3".

Anyone know what the problem could be, or how to remedy it? Is there a way
of opening the trays manually?

TIA

The E3 is a slider error. Either the pickup will not move to the resting spot,
something holding it back or the switch that signals the pickup is in the
resting spot is bad.

OK, don't suppose you know which bit is the pickup do you?

If you take the top off and inspect where the pickup is at it can tell you
better which is bad. If the pickup is on the bottom, manually move the pickup
toward the back the plug in the unit and power it on and watch if it moves
forward to the resting position. I'm guessing the pickup is stuck somewhere in
the turn and in that case the player will not open the tray. The pickup must
be on the A side in the resting position for the tray to open. You can also
move the pickup to the rest position and see it the tray will then open.

A-haaaa, I have found the problem, the pickup had come off it's runner
(christ knows how that happened). Ayway I've popped it back into place and
it know appears to be working.

Many thanks for that, that's saved me alot of hassle.

OK, next question. When I first tested it out after fixing I got an E9
message when I tried flipping it onto side "B". It's only done it the once
so I'm hopeful that it won't happen again, but you got any idea what E9
means?

E3 meant it cannot reach the correct position to try to clamp a disc, E9 means
it failed while switching from A to B, EA would be a B to A failure.

Just keep the top off and watch it switch to verify everythings OK.

The player has only done the E9 thing once, I've played several discs today
and everything has been fine, so it looks like all is well.

Many many thanks for all your help, that's saved me a hell of a lot of
agrovation.

I had this problem on my Pioneer and found that a gear was jamming somewhere.
After openning it up and playing around, I forced the tray out and back in,
gave it power, and it worked. If I recall, I had to pull the disk off of the
spinner and force it up too... I left the front of the tray off and next time
it almost hapenned, I just gave it a pull and it came on out. As for the
specifics behind the problem, I don't know.
