Hmm, and Laser Craze just went out of business (which leaves Tower Records
the only place in Boston that carries laserdisks).

Could the format be folding in the US?

And let's hope someone picks up the slack, or we'll never get *any*
sleep.

I wouldn't be too happy about Technidisc folding. If you thought delays
were bad before....what happens with one less pressing plant. Kiss those
rare days of day and date releases with VHS goodbye.

Perhaps they should use the Technidisc plant to press DVD...
Then they could hide all the artifacts in the dropouts :)

Actually, the demise of Technidisc will have no impact on laserdisc
release dates. For the last few years, only Image and MPI were using
Technidisc for pressing certain titles. Image primarily used Technidisc
for
their black & white titles, where Technidisc's notorious chroma noise
wasn't
an issue. They also used them for most of their "made-for-video & cable/
B-movie/cut-out-bound" titles that nobody buys anyway.

I think the most recent titles of "importance" that were pressed by
Technidisc
included: ALIVE (non AC-3), HOFFA (THX), JEFFREY, WRONG TROUSERS/
A GRAND DAY OUT, HARD DAY'S NIGHT, HELP, BARAKA, PRINCE OF TIDES
(Criterion), DEVO: THE COMPLETE TRUTH, TWILIGHT ZONE box sets, and
HONEYMOONERS box sets.

There were others, but these came to mind. When supplies on these titles
run out, and they warrant a repress, we can count on superior versions.

Technidisc had there ups and downs, but for the most part their quality
was
at the bottom of the scale.

Oh, and one more thing I forgot to add: The "cheap" Hoffa (P&S) was
pressed at Mitsubishi, and all things being equal, has an overall better
picture quality than its more expensive counterpart.

Add the remastered LBX of BECKETT to that list. It's a pretty decent
transfer but I checked it last night and there's a tad of what could be
rot at the start of side 3. I can't recall if it's just transfer noise or
really is rot...I'll just have to watch it for the next few months and
see if it progresses.

LD formatting requires that the colorburst pulse always be present in
the horizontal retace interval. So, the TV will think it's a color
signal even though it's B&W.

I imagine that all the FUD about DVD has caused LD sales to at least
flatten out, and that the weaker players are falling by the wayside.

...and don't celebrate the apparent death of Technidisc too loudly.
They've died and come back from the crypt at least once before.

Technidisc DID NOT press HOFFA (THX). They were NEVER THX certified.
