The instruction manual for my two Sony 19-inchers says to keep
the sets out of direct sunlight. How might the hot sun damage the set?

(I stuck my head back there and was impressed--or should I say
horrified--by how well illuminated the sun hits the back of the
tube even through the hard plastic grill.)

Heat!

UV radiation is slow death for most plastics, but the extra heat (which
is above and beyond what your set was designed for) will shorten the
life of most components in the set.

Besides, how can you possibly enjoy watching TV with the sun shining
in your eyes?
