It went for $900+ shipped yesterday. Wowser. Yes, it did have the
original manual and remote, but there was a pretty sizeable chip/scuff
on one of the rosewood panels and from the pictures of the back, it
does *not* appear to have an AC-3 mod done to it.

Weird market for this player for it to go that high. I got mine for
$350 almost 5 years ago completely unblemished with AC-3 mod, original
remote, and a photocopy of the manual -- Thank you, Kurtis! :-)

I'd like to have one of these or maybe an LD-V8000. Would use one or
the other in my home office where it'd be close by so single-sided
play wouldn't bother me. But not for that kind of money!

The market seems good right now for high-end laserdisc players.
An entry-level Runco LJRII sold for over $900 recently on ebay, and a
friend of mine sold a mint Elite 99 privately for $1000.
The Elite LD S2 is definitely a better player than the LD V8000. The
Elite LD S2 isn't prone to CLV color smear, unlike some other models.
As far as I'm concerned, the Elite LD S2 is the best of the North
American released laserdisc players, bar none.

Interesting qualifier there, Kev. Are you saying that you've seen the
HLD-X0 in action?

No,
I've owned the HLDX9. I felt that the LD S2 rivaled it and sold the X9
years ago. I'm not going to say the LD S2 was better than the X9 but
will say it "rivaled it".
To be totally honest here, I also sold my LD S2 several years ago and
my main current player is the Elite 95.
For my application it's fine. I use it with my 13 year old Proscan tube
tv :)
For me I loved trying different players. I also speculated and sold the
profitable players off from time to time.
My main two players are the Elite 95 and DVL 909. They are hooked up
respectively to my Proscan set and my 50" Pioneer Kuro plasma.
For anyone who can use the composite output of a laserdisc player, I
heartily recommend the older Elite 95. I watched a couple of laserdiscs
on it last night and the picture is definitely superior by laserdisc
standards.
It has a natural low chroma and luminence noise and doesn't require
digital noise reduction. It does have the older single DNR button on the
front panel, but it isn't necessary to use.
I watched an old pan and scan film- Children of the Corn, and the
picture was very pleasantly natural looking. Seemed as good as a
non-enhanced dvd to me.
