As for a comparable European player to the Elite 97 or 99 I am not
sure, maybe someone else can help here.

Riccardo,
Some people also think just because they have multi-Region Voltage
that they play PAL also, I know the the CLD-D770 is the same as the
CLD-D703 but with Multi-voltage but it isn't a PAL version.
Most PAl users Usually stick with the DVL-909 Europe Version and that
player is "GOLD COLOR" and it will have a 3 way switch on the back
thats labeld Auto, PAL, and NTSC. I have come accross these from a
few people for service and they do appear on E-bay here and there.
There are a variety of GOLD DVL-909's but you want the one that has
the PAL switch on the back, but most people will mention its a
European player if they are the original owners. The people I
serviced them brought them back from being in the Military Service or
heavy travel.
It does indeed have a very nice laserdisc section for playback and for
DVD.
Just my thoughts and most all internals are still available for
service if needed.

Just to confirm all the above -- the CLD-2950 was my second LD player,
and was absolutely brilliant. Both-sides play, S-Video and PAL/NTSC
(either "native" NTSC or transcoded to PAL-60). The only downside was
not having the AC-3 RF capability.
I am a bit puzzled nobody mentions the CLD-D925.

Which is the best PAL/NTSC AC3/DTS player ever!
It beats the DVL 909 and 919 hands down.
Jan
Jip, it's a very good player. 2.5 issues with it:
1. It has digital stills, which is great for CLV but does not look as
good on CAV VS. a real CAV still.
2. Some units have the "CAV bug" that gives you vertical color bars
(visible over greater areas of even color, can be annoying with anime, a
properly calibrated display will help significantly)
2.5 It's 220/240V
Mine is not going anywhere except to service.

Sorry,
I not al familiar with all the PAL Players but yes I do remember
sending a gear holder for the optics for a fellow for the D925 over a
year ago.
He did mention it was a nice player far as I know it equals a cld-d606
which has a nice detail, low background noise and no color smear.
Sorry, I really not familiar with all the PAL bu the 925 is a popular
one that I did overlook from previous e-mails from over sea's.

I recall a poster here some years ago emntioning he had a CLD-95 Elite
which played PAL as well as NTSC discs....:
http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/pioneer/pioneer_cld-95/pioneer_cld-95.htm
For all I know, there might be a mod for North American units to
enable PAL --- but I'm only guessing here.
The 95 was an excellent player in its time, though there were power
pack issues, and it was soon displaced by the CLD-97.

Indeed none of the players you mention play PAL LD's. The corresponding PAL
capable LD-players that belong to the same family/generation are:
CLD-900 (single side, PAL only, not to be confused with the CLD-900/9000 of
1983)
CLD-950 (dual standard CLD-900)
CLD-1950 (as CLD-950, nicer remote, S-video out)
CLD-2950 (dual standard, auto reverse, S-video out)
None of these players has digital frame memory and/or AC-3 RF OUT. The
latter can be added easily.
The next (and last LD only) generation CLD-D925 is the only dual standard
player having digital frame memory; the reason it is sought after. Compared
to a CLD-2950 picture is worse. The CLD-D515 is from the same generation, is
dual standard but has no digital frame memory. It exists in two versions:
with and without RF OUT (a fact still missing from laserdiscarchive.co.uk).
Dual standard DVL-909/919E's are in about the same league or just under as
the CLD-D925 picture-wise, and will operate on 120 VAC mains without
modification because they have wide range input switching power supplies.
Pioneer made not a single PAL-only LD-player with digital frame memory.

IMHO the DVL-909 (europe model) is overrated. The mechanics appear to
be fragile (I had lots of problems with my player). It's a good
player, no question, but if I had the choice I'd opt for the CLD-
D925 / or CLD-2950 with AC3-mod. Sure, the DVL-909/919 seem more
versatile due to the DVD support, but nobody wants to use it these
days. Its generation 1 DVD section with 1.5sec layer change and no
progressive out is easily outpaced by modern players.
Btw. I own both and (909 and D925) and use them regularly, so I felt
eligible to rank them :)
