The Stephen Luckins/Audiovision story is a very sad one. He was taken to
court by the so-called Film Security office and lost about $100K. I
think Audiovision have been less than careful in its approach. Selling
NTSC LDs in Australia is illegal without the proper authority. Only
Disney and Warners have relaxed their prohibition on NTSC discs...but
you still must get their approval unless you're importing for personal
use.
We've got a few LD retailers here in Sydney who seem to be able to do
the right thing and keep from being prosecuted. The one I go to has been
in business for years and last year turned-over $3 million.
According to a recent newspaper, someone in Melbourne got raided by the
Federal Police and had about a 1000 LDs confiscated...who might that
have been?

Based on the information in this post, there isn't such a thing as a
legal LD dealer in Australia. Otherwise why would they all be getting
progressively busted? Draconian measures to be sure but somebody is
protecting their copyright holdings.

To my best knowledge (which is not that great) I heard the owner (I
don't know who) took off with the insurance money and is now doing
something else. Don't know what is happening with pre-paid orders
though. Dont hold me to this as it is just what I have heard from
someone else.

Start with D.I.A. who have a shopfront in Ormond. Their web page is
www.dia.com.au, they have another page which references various LD
shops around Australia.
Starbuck's in Northcote is pretty good.

Sounds like Batman's Books, who do sell used LDs but they price them
like they're made of gold. I wouldn't recommend purchasing from there
unless you saw a hard-to-get LD that you were prepared to pay big $$$
for.

Fortunately there's a lot more than the "information in this post" to
go by. D.I.A. have an arrangement with several of the studios (and
one would hope are working on the others) to legally import and resell
NTSC LDs. The LDs that they import for resale have little stickers on
them with the Australian ratings (i.e., PG, M, etc.) and a studio logo
with "official NTSC import" or something like that.
