I recently got a spiffy new 27" Wega set with that cool 16 x 9 enhanced
mode (in fact, I'm watching a short and stalky Craig Killborn right now*)
Does anyone know of any LD titles that were released in anamorphic format,
like DVDs that are "enhanced for 16 x 9"?

It would be interesting to be able to compare such a thing with the same
title DVD on the same set. I currently have a Pioneer CLD-D704, which I
am quite happy with for LDs. DVDs look great on my PowerBook, but I need
to get a basic DVD player for proper hookup to the Sony Wega. I'm
leaning towared the Pioneer DV343, but am also considering the Toshiba
SD-1600 and Panasonic RV31k. The guy who sold me on the Wega is
recommending the Sony DVP-S470, which is apparantly "coming soon".

I also need to get a backup LD player in case the 704 ever dies on me.
Not wanting to pay $400 bucks or so that another 704 would cost on eBay,
I would need to look at something cheaper. Anybody got any
recommendations?

Thanks!

From Thad, some time back:

Title Audio Ctry. Catalog No.
---------------- ----- ----- -----------
TERMINATOR 2 AC-3 Japan PILF-2187
BASIC INSTINCT AC-3 Japan PILF-2192
CUTTHROAT ISLAND AC-3 Japan
CLIFFHANGER AC-3 Japan PILF-2188
SHOWGIRLS AC-3 Japan
STARGATE AC-3 Japan PILF-2193

FUGITIVE ? USA 16904
FREE WILLY ? USA 16903
GRUMPY OLD MEN ? USA 16905
UNFORGIVEN ? USA 16901

Not much of a selection, to be sure.

Anamorphic laserdiscs do not have an option for down-conversion to standard
letterbox. They should only be viewed on a 16:9 television or one with
similar enhancement mode.

T2, Stargate, and Basic Instinct are the theatrical cuts, not the longer
special editions. Showgirls has optical censorship, which pretty much
defeats the purpose of watching it.

Why? You mean you are distorting the picture? That is not waht the 16:9 enhancement is for.

There were only about 8 of them

Remember, too, these were produced/sold circa 1995-1996.

Note also that besides being 16:9 anamorphic they were all also AC-3/DD,
were known as "SQUEEZE LDs", and bore special stickers reading:

15th Anniversary

T H A N K Y O U !

LaserDisc

and it appears that only Pioneer Japan produced them.

You sure about that? All of the other US releases were Warner Bros titles.
Star Trek is Paramount.

Just to be clear, we are talking about 16:9-enhancement, not the phrase
"This film is presented in an 'anamorphic widescreen' format preserving the
aspect ratio of its original theatrical presentation. The black bars at the
top and bottom of the screen are normal for this format."

That phrase references only the photographic process, not the disc
presentation.

Is anyone aware of any good source for LD imports from Japan, besides
eBay, I tried a google search on those PILF-**** numbers and only came
up with three particular Japaneese only pages. Various searches for
the USA titles turned up nothing of consequence. I'd love to pick up
T2, Stargate, The Fugitive, and Unforgiven. More generally, I'd be
eternally gratefull if anyone could point me to a good source for
Japaneese inported LD's.

Try Mr. Nicolas Santini. He is absolutely impeccable.

How about:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/special/ldsale/

They got a bunch of Wide and DTS Version "Japan Only". Shipping fee seem
quite expensive though.
