Hello there. I'm pretty new to the laserdisc scene so pardon my
ignorance on these matters. I'm currently rocking a Pioneer CLD-V2600
that I picked up at a thrift store for 10 bucks, my first and only
player at the moment. My problem is that I'm getting an E-03 message
when putting in a disc (Star Trek 6, fresh out of the shrink wrap). It
also does this when I put in a CD. The weird bit is that it still
plays other discs, although Roger Rabbit started to break up and get
stuck at the end, something it also did on Star Trek 4 (also brand
new). I tried a laser diode cleaning disc I bought at Wal-Mart but it
E-03'd on me and wouldn't start. What's going on here? I read about
something called an M holder when researching this but I'm not sure if
that's the problem, what that part really is, how to find one, or how
to install it. I'd really appreciate some help here.

Also I'm looking at a CLD-D99 online. Is this a decent player. Is it
similar to the CLD-99? Thanks for your input,

Hank

You have to know how to use Google without them data-mining you. One
also must be precise stating an error code (without the "-").

This verbatim Google search (with the quotes exactly as shown below):

+"Pioneer laserdisc" +"E03"

finds this dated December 1993:

<http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pio/pe/images/portal/cit_3424/30928814CLD-V2600-2400.pdf>

which is 144 pages, 605KB, and described as the Level I and III User's Manual
and Programming Guide.

The above search is almost a googlewhack -- only 5 results. :-)

FWIW, the E03 error is described (ONLY) in the above document as:

2) E03 -- Mis-clamp condition on spin-up

The player begins to spin up the disc, then immediately spins it down
and you see the E03 error on the illuminated front panel of the player.
This error can be caused by a disc that is out of specification. Try
playing several different discs.

If the problem persists and you see the E03 error on the front panel
after trying to play several different discs, the player may need
service. Call 1-800-872-4159 for your nearest Authorized Service
Center.

My guess is the hub clamps are simply dirty and need to be cleaned.

I'm not familiar with the V2600 but the Pioneer players I have (2x HLD-X9,
CLD-99, CLD-D704, and CLD-980) are all similar in this regards:

1. remove the cover
2. remove the bridge over the platter (2 screws, one at each end)
3. rubber-like pads are now exposed, clean them. I use Formula 409.
4. reassemble and voilà.

I never heard of a CLD-D99 before, but Googling "Pioneer CLD-D99"
without the quotes finds a bunch.

CLD-D99 is the "International" version of what was sold in the US as
the Elite CLD-99. It is an excellent player by most estimate.

Thanks for the info. I opened it up and did some cleaning on the
inside, but now I'm getting an E-05 reading when I try to play a disc.
This error code isn't even in the manual. Any idea as to what's going
on?

Most likely the spindle motor is not properly centered. There is an
adjustment that moves the mechanical assembly so it lines up squarely
with the spindle motor. If close to an extreme you get intermittent
play like you describe.

To center the spindle motor you put in a CD, turn the tab and find the
two extremes where it starts skipping and then center the tab between
the extremes. May have to remove the tray in this model to do this,
cannot remember.

Thanks. I know next to nothing laserdisc players and have never really
done any work with electronics before. Is this something I can do on
my own with the proper instruction?

Write me back at kb...@comcast.net and I'll look at the service manual
to see how easy it is.

Google Groups, which you're using, mangles email addresses so that no one
except Google can data-mine and track you by the email address used to
post via Google Groups. Contrary to their slogan, Google exudes evil.

A better alternative, if you have and/or use Thunderbird or equivalent email
client or newsreader, is the free Eternal September Usenet news server:

<http://www.eternal-september.org/>

BTW, it carries even more Usenet groups than Google.

There's a funny story about the origin of the name "Eternal September":
