The CC daily special can ONLY be ordered through their
web service. Therefore, if you can't access their web server,
you can't order the disk (I suppose you could call a friend of
yours and have them order it, but I don't think too many people
are doing that).
I have gotten the usenet posting the day after the special
every time except once. Netnews is "store and forward", so posts
can take days to reach a site. Posting the daily special serves
as a "look what you could have ordered if you had www access" type
of message.
The amount of traffic is not that significant, but it's
not really helping anyone. Just my two cents.

sometimes it's nice to know what you missed. if you're waiting
for a particular disc, it's helpful to know what the special was
the day you couldn't check the web site. i wish criterion would
keep a list of the previously ordered specials.

i agree it's pretty useless for actually ordering the disc.

I beg to differ. I think it helps us with
graphically-challenged-computers-at-
work people. Like for me for instance, at work my pc is only a 386-25 with
4 megs ram and launching Netscape takes so long... but using trn and
reading a.v.l. I could check right away what the special of the day is and
see if I like it.

So for that guy who was posting it: please continue to do that and thanks.

Yes, but if I know what the disc is and I don't want it, I don't have to
go to
the web site, saving online time for me and reducing internet traffic.
Also,
I don't have to repeatedly try to get in if I'm having trouble getting to
Voyager
(and it sounds like a lot of us HAVE had problems getting in from time to
time).
If it's a disc I want, and I know about it, I'll keep trying to access the
page until
I get in.

Maybe for you, but not for everyone. I usually see the message the day
it was posted.

Well, it helps me. I hope others will continue to post the special. Like
you said,
it's not that significant. Two more cents!

P.S. 8/14 special: For All Mankind

If this is true, it's a damn shame. I will check the site daily,
but there's no way in hell I'm sending my credit card number over the
net, Netscape "secure transaction" or otherwise. Pity.

Well, it's helping me. I've gotten all the messages same day. It's a
big help. Sure, it doesn't take much to check the site, but I check
a.v.l. everyday anyway. I say keep posting!

You won't send it over Netscape, but you're willing to give it out over the
phone? Netscape is safer.

YES, they will refuse to take the order over the phone, you must use the Web.

I'll take an order over the phone, if you know what the special is, you
know you want to buy it, and you have an e-mail address that I can send a
receipt to. 212-431-5199. Please use this number only if you can't get to
the site. Web orders are actually much safer than phone orders.

I agree. I see the specials the day they are posted, and they are a help
to me. I have Web access, too, and will have no problem ordering over
the Web, when I have some money, that is (too bad I don't have any
now...I'd have really liked to order Princess Bride, which was on sale
today--Oh, well, I'll have to order it when it comes around again).

Also, does voyager post specials on weekends (the only days I *don't*
check Usenet)?

Well then I would speak to a supervisor, I just find it hard to
believe they would REFUSE money.

I would't refuse anybody's money. But then I'm kind of hard to reach on
the phone. It's easy to get me to call you back though. I don't know what
your phone experience has been with Voyager, but this will not be a
problem anymore.

I think it helps to post the special. Despite what others have posted
here, we are not going to take down the daily special if people check it
on AOL as opposed to our web-page. I understand that our page is huge, and
can be slow to download. Voyager is trying to push the envelope when it
comes to graphics on the internet. Right now we are working on an entire
3-D museum space, to navigate through. Please, if it helps, post the
special.

Why doesn't voyager post the daily special itself then? Since
voyager knows what the daily special is going to be, you can post at
exactly the time it becomes available (or even earlier, to help compensate
for the propagation delay).

The other possibility is to have a text only page for popular
lookups like this and the CD special. Then people could load the link
lightning fast and view the special.

Keep up the great work with the web page. It's always the one I
show people when I demonstrate the services and graphics for the Web.
