A while back, I saw two mini-series based on the life of Verdi and
Wagner, respectively. The Verdi production is a European production,
filmed mostly in Italy (of course!). It was quite long. I didn't remember
much about it except that the introduction and trailer music came from
Prelude to Rigoletto (malediction theme).

As for the Wagner series, it was Richard Burton's role as Richard Wagner
(his last major role before his death). I saw it a while back on US's
Public TV back in 1987.

I would like to get a copy of both of them on video or laserdisc
(preferably on NTSC). If anyone has any info on where I could order by
mail order (or even email), please let me know. Thanks in advance for
your reponses!

I think the Verdi is available through PBS. I know San Fransisco
Opera had the Wagner ones available when they last did the Ring in 1990
along with the local Wagner Society's screening of an older Wagner movie
(not Richard Burton) I think called "Magic Fire". Call SFO and see if
you can talk to someone in the Wagner Society.

Make sure that you get the original production of the Verdi. There
was a shortened version that replaced the original narrator with
Burt Lancaster. He could'nt even pronounce Verdi's name (made the e
sound like the i in virtual). I don't know who the narrator was in
the original production.
