I was listening to the album "Astra" by Asia, and it seems like to
me that the first 20-odd seconds of the 6th song ("Countdown to Zero")
is the same as the sound that accompanies the THX logo at the beginning
of discs....

Mere coincidence?

Probably. Check out the the opening of the "widescreen video" section of
_A Video Standard_ (Reference Recordings, LD-101). It is accompanied by
some music, I believe by Kevin Braheny (sp?) from a new-age recording.
The intro is _very_ similar to the THX logo sound.

Also, the opening of Culture Beat's "Serenity" CD is a 99% rendition of the
THX chord. "Turn it up! TUUUURN-IIIIT-UUUUP!" :)

Bye,
Thomas

Actually, it can be found on the "Digital Domain" CD recorded
by Stanford ??? Univ. back around 1981??. I think it's near the end of
the opening track that progresses from the crickets to the 747 landings
and takeoffs. My impression is that THX borrowed it from this disc,
unless Stanford borrowed it from somewhere else.

Just from memory, but doesn't one of the chords in the old 'United Arists'
logo sound the same as well? (Watch the intro in 'Rocky')

Anyhow,
James K.
