DVL-91 : Code free, Macrovision free (if chip version xxx)
DVL-909 : Code free, Macrovision free AND "DVL-91 upgrade"
Summarization attempt
=====================
So is it truly worth it to buy a refurbished DVL-909, pray that the
unit comes with the old firmware chip (1.210/8) so I could possibly
replace two resistors without fragging the board so I can have a DVL-91?
I'd still have to order the better remote from Pioneer, and possible the
old firmware chip (I think I saw it quoted at $50) if I didn't receive a
909 with the desired firmware. Then I'd still have to solder the piece
of wire to ground a circuit to deactivate Macrovision, then solder a
couple end points together to defeat the region lockout mechanism and
make it "selectable".
All of a sudden that $579 price doesn't seem as killer.
Then again, if I just get the next "budget" player, the DVL-919, I'm
still stuck with a less than lovely remote, still have macrovision and
region problems, and have no current fix for either! Ugh...
Lastly there's the DVL-91, which comes with MORE than everything and
has (gasp!) the price to back it up. :-( The good news? I get the
remote I want, and have a player I can still modify. But do I really
want to be ripping the cover off of a brand new DVL-91, voiding the
warranty on a pretty EXPENSIVE player?
Nah... I guess the DVL-909 is still the best way to go for cost, though
I'm sure Pioneer isn't "giving away" those DVL-91 remotes... I bet they
cost a pretty penny. At least the modifications on a refurbished player
wouldn't be so devastating. It'd be so much easier if they'd just
make the player we all want FOR CHEAP!! ;-)
Anything else I should consider in this decision-making process?

Thanks for the input, Gary. You could probably tell by my original post
that by the time I was done, I was more or less talking myself into the
909. I mean, I really don't *need* those rosewood panels; and if I
require the shielding I guess I could steal a manhole cover and set it
between my TV and the player... ;-)

Gary,
Mind sharing where you found some refurb Pioneer remotes?

: The key sentence is "pray the unit comes with the old firmware chip". If DTS is
: important to you and you're hoping to get a particular firmware by chance, you
: may be in trouble. If you can get the seller to verify the firmware of the
: machine you'll get first, then go for it.
Speaking of which, someone told me how to check the firmware on a 909 but I
forget how. How doya? DTS is no biggie but nice to know. I want to look into
the macrovision and region code killing mods once the warranty is out.
