know nothing about this one....

I've got a couple of these that still work great after 12 years - they are
solid and were built to last. They will play old discovision discs that
newer machines immediately eject. It has digital sound (no ac3) and 2 sets
of audio out jacks that will let you listen to both the analog and digital
audio at the same time. Single sided play.
> Pioneer CLD D701
I've got a couple of these too. They're approaching 7 years old and one's
beginning to develop a little mechanical noise. A nice full-featured dual
sided player. Jog-shuttle knobs on both the remote and player (and I use
the knob on the player more often than the remote). Has digital audio, can
be modified for ac3. Marginal discs look better but it hates discovision
discs.

No personal experience with this but the xx80 series was one of pioneer's best.

You can still get these with a warranty, but I think the 838's and 1080's
will still be running when these have died.

comments on a few others I have experience with..
Pioneer CLD-D704 - A successor to the CLD-D701 with ac3 audio, but a major
downgrade, jog shuttle on remote only, display can't be turned off, much
lighter weight and mine is in the shop again with side-changing mechanical
problems.
Pioneer CLD-D515 - plays both pal and ntsc discs, includes ac3 audio.
Solid and reliable dual side player.
Pioneer CLD-D925 - pal/ntsc model similar to the 704, another light weight.
For the long term, you'll be better off with any of the single sided
players - they maintain their alignment better and the side change
mechanism is the weakest link in the 2 sided machines.
One person's opinion - your mileage may vary.... Rod
You must have a different CLD-D704 than me. Mine has jog/shuttle on the
remote and on the machine itself and the "FL OFF" button turns off the
display on the front panel. Have had no mechanical problems, but one of the
analog tracks cannot be heard, which is an original factory defect I never
noticed while it was under warranty, and cannot justify spending big bucks
to get it fixed at this point.

Can't comment on the others, but I've got a Pioneer 702 (with a MSB digital out added
about 1 1/2 years ago) for about 6 years now and it is working flawlessly. Very solid
performer, with regular use. I'll probably get it a tuneup sometime soon, I intend to keep
it for a while. The only other players I liked were the Pioneer Elite 59 and 79, but not
enough of a difference to make it worthwhile trading up, but if you find one of these,
take a look.

Agreed. These two are way too flimsy built.

That would be too much of a tradeoff in convenience for my taste, but to each his own, as
they say.

exactly.

I also have a CLD-D704, and it has a jog shuttle on the front of the
unit. It has been running movies for years, and it doesn't have any
problems flipping sides. I've never tried running audio tracks in
analog mode, but that doesn't effect me since all of my LDs use
digital audio tracks.
I also recommend the CLD-D704. It's the best of the non-elite Pioneer models,
not counting the ones in Japan of course. I don't know what Rodney is talking
about. The CLD-D703 is also recommended. It's exactly the same as the 704
except no AC-3 out.

Try to get a used Pioneer Elite CLD-97 (no AC-3 without a simple mod) or
CLD-99. They are far better than any of these units. You are not likely to
find a used Runco LJR-II (IMO about equivalent to the CLD-97) or Faroudja
LD-1000 (equivalent to the CLD-99 for video performance but includes
additional audio outputs), but these would also be very good, although
much more expensive. Another good choice, but somewhat lessor video
quality would be a Pioneer Elite CLD-79.

Does anybody have experience with the new Theta Voyager? How does it
compare to other top end units for both DVD and LD playback?

There is a review of the Theta Voyager (complete with measured video
performance) in The Perfect Vision #25, which will mail June 15. I won't
say anything else about it here, until then.
