Ark! Brain... hurts.

I'm a little unclear on some compatibility issues
between VHS and SVHS cassettes and their respective
players. In simple terms, are these formats related
similarly to the double-density / high-density flop-
py disk relationship?

[1] Will a VHS VCR play SVHS tapes? (Perhaps, minus
the wonderful extra resolution?)
[2] Will a SVHS VCR record in VHS mode, if a VHS
tape is used?

Thanks lots for any thoughts. Meanwhile... aspirin.

Vaugely, yes.

AFAIK, a VHS VCR won't be able to play anything recorded in SVHS mode.
However, it would be able to play a SVHS tape whose contents are recorded
in VHS mode.

Yes.

A VHS player will accept SVHS tapes, but does not have the equipment to read
and decode the extra SVHS information. You can still play them, but the
picture looks like a pay-per-view channel that hasn't been paid for :)

Yes.

If you're considering getting a SVHS deck, I highly suggest that you do. The
quality difference is huge. Stick to Panasonic and your're golden.

Remember that a Quasis SVHS capable VHS unit can play back SVHS tapes at
normal VHS resolution.

Some VHS units will also play back the SVHS signal but the image will look
overly bright and very grainy. Other VHS units just black out the signal.

The overly bright/grainy image can be compensated for partially by turning
down the sharpness and the brightness.

A typical one won't, but you can buy a VCR that can play SVHS tapes.

Yes. SVHS is 100% compatible with VHS.

NO. Or rather, any tapes you play will look like crap.
(Think of how a scrambled cable channel looks when you try to
view it without a descrambler.)

>[2] Will a SVHS VCR record in VHS mode, if a VHS

Yes, even if you set the VCR to record in SVHS by default.
SVHS tapes are physically different: there is a small hole on the
underside of the tape casing, which is used by the VCR to determine
the tape format. A trick I've seen is to buy a high-grade VHS tape,
drill the hole yourself, and fool the VCR into recording the tape
in SVHS mode (mind you, I don't recommend this!!).

It depends on the player. Many of the newer ones do. I bought my
parents a cheap RCA and it played my SVHS tapes just fine (in VHS
resolution of course). However a new Samsung I bought does not play
them. So check before buying.

Yes.

Most VHS VCRs in Japan the last several years come with
the ability to play back SVHS.
But different in other countries though..

Considering SVHS tapes are cheaper than some high grade VHS tapes,
it's not worth drilling the hole.. (^_^;)

Also you can use SVHS tapes to record in non-SVHS machines too.
Some people say it looks better this way.

I have not figured out a way to record in VHS mode on SVHS tapes
in a SVHS machine.. Is this possible?

If you can drill a hole to make the machine think it's an SVHS tape,
would covering the hole make it think it's VHS?

greetings
There's something called the instruction manual ...

There's also a manual on / off switch for SVHS mode on all machines...
Look for it ... though ... what's the point?

It is on my Proscan. There is a manual switch which will make the VCR
record in VHS mode on an SVHS tape. I've never used it. :-)

Yes, look for VCRs that have SQPB.

Most SVHS VCRs have an option to turn off SVHS in the setup menu.

Oh, and the reason I posted is that Victor (JVC) released a new
S-VHS VCR in Japan that records SVHS resolution on VHS tapes.

Check this URL:

(In Japanese)

Not sure how the quality is, though.
