Hi all,

I'm thinking about purchasing a new Sony MDP-600 ld player. Is this a wise
choice? I know that it has almost all the features I like including dual-
side play, jog shuttle on the remote, mic input, s-video outs, and special
effects on CAV discs. Is this a good player to buy (I'm asking current
owners, of course)? I would also like to know what the Tri-digital video
processing does or is, and if you have encountered flipping problems or
powering off problems as I have read on other Sony LD players. Your
advice is greatly appreciated.

thanx,
michael

P.S. are the panasonics or pioneers good ld players? perhaps better than
sony?

Not sure if this will help, but.....

I have a Sony MDP-800. Bought it in June and have loved it. The other
night, it did it. The problem has been discussed here before. At the
end of side 2 of "When a Man Loves a Woman" (which is a great movie btw),
the player said 'close' on the front and then shut off. Everytime I
turned it on, it said 'close' on the front and shut itself off again
after about 5 or so seconds. I left it unplugged overnight and tried it
again the next day. No help. I took it in to get it worked on......and
they plugged it in and it was working fine. I took it home and finished
the movie and no problems.

Now, after saying this, I would still say go with Sony. I've always been
impressed with their equipment and have had no problems up until now.
When the problem happened, I called all the Sony authorized repair shops
in town (Sacramento) and none of them heard of this problem before. I
called Sony up and they said this is not a problem they've heard of
before (take that for what you will).

Hopefully this doesn't happen again. Not sure, but maybe someone else
can tell you about problems with Pioneer or other equipment. Sony can't
be the only one with an occasional glitch.

Whatever you get, you'll end up enjoying the medium.

We have a MDP-600 and we are having the same problem with the player locking up and not being able to get the disc out. Usually we have to hit the side of the player so the mechanisism unlocks and we can get our disc out. I guess we should have gotten a Pioneer instead of a Sony, but if you are interested in good prices on the sony players Sound City has good prices on them. We paid about $450 dollars a year ago for ours. Sound City is out of New Jersey or New York!!!!!!

I've owned a SONY MDP-333 since early 1991. There are no scratches on
my disks, small or otherwise.

My Experience is that SONY players tend to be the worst in the LV
industry when it comes to tracking warped discs.

Many dealers will not take back a "defective" disc is it plays on their
player. It you have a tracking problem on a Sony player and it does not
show up on your dealer's Pioneer player, than you may be out of luck!

My advice: Stay with Pioneer! It may not be perfect, but it's the one
that will track 'em when no other player will!!!

Mine plays ok but sometimes shuts down when trying to eject the disk. Then
it won't stay running and keeps turning off untill a downward impact in
the front right corner is applied and then it will eject and work fine for
about two months when it happens all over again. I've never seen a warped
laserdisc, I'm glad I dont shop where the other guy did!
