I think you will find many testimonials here in favor of Bayview
Electronics:

Also Kurtis Bahr, who used to be a regular poster to this group before
his ISP discontinued Usenet service. I'm not sure about his current
contact info but someone else will likely chime in with that.

If that's the only problem (ISP discontinuing Usenet service) and Kurtis
still has an email address and someone knows how to reach him, one great
and free Usenet provider is Eternal-September:

<http://www.eternal-september.org/>

<http://www.eternal-september.org/serverstatus.php?language=en>

which I've been using for a long time going back to when it was
known as "Motzarella". :-)

To understand the meaning of the name "Eternal September":

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September>

FWIW, Thunderbird supports *BOTH* email *AND* Usenet and is what I
presently use for both. Many other email clients do the same. For
a Usenet-only client I prefer knews (UNIX/Linux only).

Here's a small screenshot showing knews in use on a UNIX box:

<http://thadlabs.com/PIX/motzarella_knews.jpg>

and here's a small screenshot showing how to select and subscribe
to a Usenet newsgroup in Thunderbird:

<http://thadlabs.com/PIX/motzarella_NGs.jpg>

FYI, NNTP is Network News Transfer Protocol:

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_News_Transfer_Protocol>

As to whether Usenet will continue to exist, the writing is already
on the wall. Usenet began at Duke University and Duke just shut down
its server earlier this year:

<http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/2010/05/usenet.html>

If Usenet does go belly-up, Yahoo groups would be a good alternative.
I moderate several tech groups there (linux, etc.) and participate
in many astronomy and photography related groups.

I'll provide a testamonial for "Eternal-September" previously known as
"Motzarella". It's free and it is as good as any ISP associated
newsgroup provider. And if you're into binaries then you can also use
Giganews' text groups, which offer retention back to the stone age.

SDF public access UNIX system also provides shell based USENET access
(trn, emacs gnus, tin, slrn) to validated users and students.

You might want to fix SDF's system clock. This:

If anyone needs to reach Kurtis Bahr for LD player repairs, I do have
his e-mail address, so just let me know.

I also do Repair on the East Coast, I usually don't post much on here,
but I have been busy selling parts, Especially for the CLD-99, 704
series as Pioneer has a hold on some parts in inventory.

I'm always restoring a CLD-3070 for someone as the lubrication grease
sets up on these and they need a complete tear down, still a nice LD
Player.
